501R E S O L U T I O NWHEREAS, A group from Baylor University is visiting the StateCapitol on February 19, 2009, and this occasion provides a fittingopportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this notableinstitution; andWHEREAS, Baylor University dates back to 1841, when 35delegates at the Union Baptist Association meeting accepted aproposal by the Reverend William Milton Tryon and State DistrictJudge R. E. B. Baylor to create a Baptist university in Texas; theTexas Baptist Education Society later petitioned the Congress ofthe Republic of Texas, and, on February 1, 1845, an act was signedinto law that officially established Baylor University; ReverendTryon and Judge Baylor are regarded as the founders of theuniversity, along with the Reverend James Huckins, who was thefirst Baptist missionary to Texas and the university
