What must be done topreserve Western Civili-zation.

f current trends continue, sometime in the middle of the next cen-tury the majority of this nation’sinhabitants will be nonwhites. Ashas been shown repeatedly in the pages of 
 American Renaissance
,the presence of large numbers of nonwhites irrevocably changes thecharacter of a school, neighbor-hood, city or state. Most whitesfind these changes so disagreeablethat they simply move away. How-ever, they can do this only becausethere are still many areas of thecountry that are overwhelminglywhite. What will happen if whites become a minority?Even before whites are reduced toa minority, the shift towards a largelynonwhite population will be felt in allareas of life. Taxes, crime, and diseasewill rise. “Reverse discrimination”will become the norm. Ever larger  parts of the country will be essentiallyoff limits to whites, even as govern-ment resorts to ever more draconianmeasures to enforce integration. Leg-islatures and schools dominated bynonwhites will rewrite our history, belittle our heritage, overturn our monuments, and abandon the culturalnorms of our civilization. This is thegreat crisis of our times.

 As the demographic tide shifts, itwill be futile to defend “the canon” of Western literature or, in the South, totry to keep the Confederate flag flyingover state houses. A faculty that islargely black and Hispanic will notteach Melville; nor will nonwhite leg-islators assemble beneath a banner they see as a symbol of white con-sciousness.Although they indicate a mood of uneasiness in the country, Republican political victories will do nothing butreduce taxes in the short run—if that.In the long run, Republicans show nodesire to stop the change in America’s population. Of course, this greatchange renders mainstream politicalactivity as we now know it virtuallyirrelevant, but to speak about raceopenly is to be banished from publicdiscourse as a “racist.”On one point I do not wish to bemisunderstood. Obviously, large num- bers of blacks and Hispanics are notviolent, of low IQ, or disinclined towork. The question is not whether allmembers of a racial group behave in acertain way, but whether enough do soto make the societies they create unde-sirable for whites. To answer thisquestion in the affirmative is not, asleftist moralists would have us be-lieve, an ethical flaw. At the simplestlevel, it is no more than the desire tosecure an orderly and safe life for one-self and one’s descendants.
Will Nonwhites Change?
 The prevailing wisdom is thatdemographic change is not a prob-lem because, with enough time andeffort, nonwhites will become morelike whites. Liberals, despite theclear evidence of the past fortyyears, still insist that if we give moremoney to minorities, discriminateagainst a few more whites, and sup- press the cultural and historicalmemories of Euro-Americans, theraces can be made interchangeable.“Respectable” conservativesseem to think that the solution is toabolish welfare and establish more“enterprise zones,” where minoritiescan start businesses. The free marketwill then prevail and Republicans canfind out whether shopping malls reallydo transform the soul of a people.(Perhaps they do, but certainly not for the better.)It may be that the Christian Rightand the “paleo-conservatives” havethe least fanciful plan for minorities:A revival of religion, values, and man-ners from pre-1960s America—that is,from before the triumph of liberaldecadence—will improve minority behavior. This is not completelywrong-headed. If our schools still usedMcGuffey Readers and taught virtueand discipline as they used to, allAmericans would be very different.However, there are three practicalconsiderations that render this dreamillusory. First, there is virtually nochance that inner-city schools willadopt the beliefs and practices of Mid-dle America of the 1950s. Indeed,

Tacelli mademany excellent points about morality,I think Mr. Taylor's responses im- proved most of them. It seems sym- bolic of Fr. Tacelli's approach that incommenting on the decay of the out-door statues at Oxford he implies thatno one seems to know why they are being eroded by "a kind of stonerav-aging leprosy." The explanation issimple: The atmosphere is loaded withsulfurous acids produced by the "dark Satanic mills" William Blake com- plained of in 1809.That a cleric educated in the hu-manities should appear to be unawareof this is symptomatic of the gulf be-tween the humanities and the sciences.Perhaps it is only historical accidentthat created this gulf, and has thereby produced a humanistic elite that thinks"liberalism" means the denial of racialdifferences.Mr. Taylor repudiates this connec-tion, pointing out that Europeans canserenely accept the fact that, statisti-cally speaking, whites are inferior toOrientals in terms of IQ. Why, then,cannot blacks accept what time andfate has given them? In any case, theaverage individual, of whatever race,has to accept the fact that there arehundreds of millions of people whoare superior to himself. Every individ-ual must live with his deficiencies.In the long run it is

that adetermined race can substitute will for fate. Which genetic variants survive ingreater numbers is determined by se-lection, and human beings can con-sciously influence selection, if theyhave the will to do so. The willingmay be unconscious of its most im- portant consequences.To cite an illustration: If society pays for the birth and rearing of allchildren – even paying for fertilitytreatments for those who are unem- ployed and relatively less competentat urban living – then we can expectthat groups that are parasitic on soci-ety will become steadily more numer-

Sir – In your reply to my article inthe January issue, I was disconcertedto find myself described as "in impor-tant respects . . . a racialist" – espe-cially since the last third of my talk had been an explicit rejection of ra-cialism. You say that "to acknowledge[i] a preference for one's own kindand to observe [ii] that nonwhites, insufficient numbers, transform societyin unacceptable ways are clear expres-sions of racial consciousness."At the risk of spurning what I knowwas intended as praise, let me statefor the record: (i) the "kind" I happento prefer is not in the first place deter-mined by race; and (ii) the observa-tion about "nonwhites" is not mine.What I did observe in my talk wasrather different: Many of those towhom AR appeals are first-hand wit-nesses of social and cultural collapse,and their experience has linked thiscollapse to the presence of

 – not just "nonwhites" – in sufficientnumbers. The point was: These arenot racialists filled with "white pride," but simply people who have come,often bitterly, to fear and dislike blacks. argument.Just as an idea cannot be judged by itssource, neither can it be judged by itsaudience. An idea stands or falls onits own merits, like a work of art. A painting becomes no less beautiful if its painter cuts off an ear, or if it isappreciated by Nazis. I would re-spectfully remind Fr. Tacelli thatChristianity attracts its share of squir-rels; we don't discount it for that.We cannot build a society on lies,however well-intentioned. Ugly truthsare comely when compared to prettylies. Name Withheld, Fla.Sir – With regard to Fr. Tacelli'sarticle, the awakening of our con-sciousness and identity are vital for our survival. At the same time, weneed transcendent moral, spiritual,and ethical values and an emphasis onthe interdependence of individual andcommunity.I believe that the universalistegali-tarian aspect of Christianity is devas-tating to us, but it is important to re-tain the essential aspects of our Judeo-Christian heritage as a connec-tion with the past. We therefore needa church to affirm, support, and en-courage our group. What about a Cau-casian Orthodox Church? there is little reason to think thatwhites themselves have much interestin the ways of their ancestors. Second,how quickly could this revolution invalues come about? What is thechance of a spiritual and moral re-awakening in Harlem before non-whites become a majority? Third,even if a return to traditional valuesradically reduced crime and povertyamong nonwhites, it would not bridgethe IQ gap. America would still facethe prospect of entering the 21st cen-tury as a nation in which many peoplewere incapable of functioning in amodern society.At an even more fundamentallevel, are the symbols, myths, songs,memories, manners, and dreams of white America relevant to large num- bers of blacks and Hispanics?
Should 
 they be? If not, we are back where westarted; as the number of whites dwin-dles, Western Civilization disappearswith them.
Minority Conservatives
 It is important to note that there are black and Hispanic conservatives whoare struggling to persuade their peopleto behave responsibly. They deservethe support of all fair-minded people.Their writings and movements shouldinterest

readers because they raisethe question that all who believe inracial differences—be they genetic or deeply cultural—must answer hon-estly: How are we to approach thoseminorities who live and advocatelives of civility, who even acknowl-edge the European nature of our na-tion and live in deference to it?We should support minority effortsat self-help. We should welcome black and Hispanic spokesmen whoadvocate self-reliance, religion, andthe virtues of our civilization. Muchcould be accomplished if theirs werethe dominant minority voices.But even in the unlikely event of atriumph by minority conservatives,our attitude towards them should beno different from that toward Asianimmigrants (who often show lower levels of crime and poverty thanwhites). We can welcome a smallnumber of people of different racesinto this nation if they embrace our civilization, but we cannot allow thenation to lose its European identity. No people is obligated to abandon itsnational identity—in which race playsa significant part.Any large group of nonwhites, nomatter how well-intentioned, willeventually change our society in per-manent ways. A nation dominated by blacks, Asians, or Hispanics, or onethat is a majority-less farrago of racescannot help but be different from onethat is dominated by whites. We haveevery right to prefer to live in a soci-ety of our own making, and weshould not be compelled to open our nation and culture to the changes thatlarge-scale racial incursion inevitably

Emigration or Separation?
 What, then, are whites to do?One undesirable possibility would be to abandon an increasingly third-world United States and return,
enmasse
to Europe. This would assumethat Europe had solved its own racial problems by strictly limiting nonwhiteimmigration. But would Europe wantanother 100 million citizens? In thewaning days of white rule, the govern-ments of Rhodesia and South Africatried to prevent mass exodus by mak-ing it illegal to take assets out of thecountry. A black-Hispanic Americangovernment would probably do thesame thing, turning most whites into penniless refugees.Another possibility, which is noth-ing more than an extension of whatmost whites do now, is enclave exis-tence. Today, whites pay a substantial premium to live in their ownneighborhoods, free of blacks andHispanics. They are also willing to pay for private schools for their chil-dren, in addition to the taxes they payfor public schools. For most whites,this is an acceptable exchange.However, as the population shifts,as crime increases, and the govern-ment resorts to ever more ingeniousmethods of forced integration, en-claves will become precarious ref-uges. In South Africa, ever since the breakdown of apartheid, whiteneighborhoods have started hiring pri-vate security patrols. This is alreadyhappening in some American suburbs,and may become the norm in the fu-ture. Whites will develop variousways to barricade their neighborhoodsagainst the “rising tide of color,” butwill a nonwhite government allowwhites to live separately and to protectthemselves by private means? It ismore likely that government will force“low-income housing” into all white
