 Introduction
The performance of candidates at the
rst sitting of this paper was encouraging. Good answerswere seen for all of the questions and it was clear that many candidates had prepared well forquestions relating to the pre-released article and were able to draw on knowledge from otherunits for synoptic questions. By contrast, it was obvious when a candidate had not paid suf
cientattention to preparation of synoptic material. Throughout the paper candidates frequently lostcredit due to a lack of clarity of expression and a failure to use the context given in the question. There was evidence that some candidates were unaware of the criteria for quality of writtenexpression in those questions marked with an asterisk, and responses were often far too long as aresult of a lack of focus on the actual question. Very long answers are unlikely to be appropriatewhere two marks are available, for example, and candidates should be encouraged to selectonly relevant information. As seems inevitable, a signi
cant number of responses showed thatthe candidate had not read the question suf
ciently carefully and credit was lost as a result. Anumber of questions allowed candidates to show a thorough understanding of biological processesand score well, although some misconceptions were surprisingly widespread. Questions requiringapplication of understanding tended to be less well done, and these allowed better candidates toshow themselves. In particular there were a number of super
cial answers to questions relatingto the article where a much deeper understanding is required. Candidates should be aware thatonly some of the answers are to be found in the text and that most often they should be lookingfor links to knowledge they already have.
