Blacks have a long historyof separatist movements.

he founding fathers, like manyother great men in American his-tory, recognized the problems of multi-racialism and wanted to avoidthem. Some of this country’s mostprominent 19th-century leaders sup-ported the efforts of the American Colo-nization Society to help blacks return toAfrica (see AR, August 1998). Through-out American history whites have dis-tanced themselves from blacks, some-times by custom, sometimes by law.It is less well known that blacks alsohave a long history of separatist and“back-to-Africa” movements. Some of these were attempts to escape slavery orsecond-class citizenship, but others wereexpressions of black pride and racialnationalism. What they all had in com-mon was the understanding that multi-racialism does not work, and that the besthope for blacks was that they be free toshape their own destiny.Although Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was the best known and most in-fluential of the black separatists, severallesser-known men were actually moresuccessful–sometimes remarkably so–inhelping American blacks move to Af-rica or establish black communities inthe United States. Today, most blacks seethe advantages of remaining within thelarger white society–from which, unlikewhites, they can withdraw into self-con-sciously racial groups and organizationswhenever they like–but there are stillmany who would prefer complete sepa-ration.
Early Efforts
Paul Cuffee (1759-1817), a free, half-black, half-American Indian Quakerfrom Massachusetts, started the firstblack separatist movement in 1816. Heconcluded it was best for Americanblacks to leave the country rather thantry to change it, and managed to get thefinancial backing from the British gov-ernment to transport 38 free blacks toSierra Leone. This West African nationhad been established by the British as ahaven for free and escaped slaves. Origi-nally a private preserve of abolitionistsand philanthropists, the governmenttook it over in 1807 after banning sla-very throughout the empire.Cuffee died a year after this first voy-age, unable to carry out his plans to re-settle more blacks. It would be almost40 years before another serious move-ment arose to continue his work, but twospecific events revived separatist senti-ment among the leading blacks of themid-19th century: Liberian indepen-dence and the Fugitive Slave Act.In 1847 Liberia declared indepen-dence. The country’s leaders were freeAmerican blacks who had been trans-ported to Africa by the American Colo-nization Society. Thanks to the help andfinancial support of the ACS, the colonyhad been a success. Blacks were able togo to Africa without fear of starving orbeing killed by hostile natives and, whatis more, Liberia was governed by blacks.“Back to Africa” was no longer just adream.Just three years later, Congress passedthe Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, whichallowed owners of runaway slaves toreclaim them even if they escaped to freestates. This was a great setback even fornorthern blacks, since there were casesof free blacks being taken into slaveryeither mistakenly or deliberately for thereward money offered for escapedslaves. The act symbolized the precari-ous status of blacks, and had the effectof increasing black emigration toCanada.Spurred by this legislation, a nationalblack emigration convention in Cleve-land in 1854 drew the leading separat-ists of the period. Describing their situ-ation as one of “disappointment, dis-couragement, and degradation,” becauseof the continuation of slavery, they dis-cussed emigration–though they decidedagainst leaving the Western Hemisphere.Other black emigration conventionswere held in 1856 and 1858 though norelocations ever resulted from them.One person at the initial conventionwas a physician named Martin R. Delany(1812-1885). He had originally pro-posed a “Caribbean Negro Empire,” butby 1859 was the chief commissioner of a party exploring the Niger Valley inWest Africa. Delany came up with a planto transport blacks to Africa and growcotton. The profits would not only sus-

I was some-what encouraged by Jared Taylor’s re-sponse but by the time any changes canbe implemented, states like Texas andCalifornia will be primarily Mexicanand Spanish-speaking. ,Stanley Hornbeck provides an excellentsummary of Dr. MacDonald’s devastat-ing indictment of the Jewish role in thedestruction of the white race and whitecivilization. Unfortunately, Mr. Horn-beck ends his article with a form of apo-logia; noting that some Jews seem toagree with the philosophy of AR, hesuggests that we would be “foolish” and“ungrateful” to reject Jewish assistancein saving our civilization.But is it “ungrateful” to reject the vi-sion of Michael Hart, who proposes a“white separatist state,” which, accord-ing to Prof. Hart, “may include Asiansand others?” Is it “ungrateful” to ques-tion why Robert Weissberg advocates apolicy that Jared Taylor terms “defeat-ist in the short term and suicidal in thelong term?”Indeed, we may ask whether it is“foolish” to suspect that the recent in-terest some Jews have shown towardpro-white activism is merely an attemptto promote their own group interestswithin the racialist movement. Are theyattempting to twist the ideology and di-rection of this movement in a directionmore conducive to long-term Jewish in-terests? We ignore the lessons given byDr. MacDonald at our peril.E. Theseare men who put their careers on the lineto fight the anti-white forces that areascendant throughout the Westernworld. Indeed, if we ever do regain ournerve and racial identity, Jewish intel-lectuals will probably deserve a lot of credit.Name Withheld, Cheshire, Ct.Sir – The role of Jews in pushing forthe destruction of America is obviousto anyone able to identify Jews. Pragmatist philoso-pher and “educator” John Dewey alsoplayed an important role in attacking thewhite identity.

And clearlythe multi-ethnic America brought aboutby high rates of non-European immigra-tion raises the ethnic consciousness of all groups in society, while rendering tra-ditional melting pot notions of Ameri-can nationality dated and nearly irrel-evant. has been a longtime coming, since Jews have been ba-sically exempt from critical analysis eversince the Holocaust. Even though thereis some merit in Prof. MacDonald’s ar-gument as summarized by Mr. Horn-beck, we do not believe Jews supportleft-wing causes because of their desireto strengthen the Jewish community. If his argument were true, those who holdthe most left-wing views would be thosewho were the most pious Jews. That isnot the case. Generally, the Jews whohave had the views Prof. MacDonalddescribes are those who have abandonedthe practice of Judaism and have assimi-lated into the mainstream of secular so-ciety. In many cases, these Jews actu-ally have contempt for their religiousand cultural brethren. Moreover, Prof.MacDonald picks and chooses Jews whonicely fit his theory and excludes those,like the co-author of the
 Bell Curve
, Ri-chard Herrnstein, who do not.Wouldn’t people who support univer-salist values such as Socialism, egalitari-anism and Communism welcome a so-ciety in which all religious differenceswere eliminated? Jews would certainlydisappear as a people in such a society.And in fact secular Jews have been in-termarrying with gentiles for the lastgeneration at rates exceeding 50 percent.To quote Friedrich Nietzsche, “Jewswant and wish, even with some impor-tunity, to be absorbed and assimilatedby Europe; they long to be fixed, per-mitted, respected, somewhere at longlast, putting an end to the nomad’s life.”Needless to say, assimilation has hada very troubled history. Jews felt aliento all they encountered–Church, culture,European backwardness–living, as theydid, among people who were bound upwith the soil and the idea of a father-land. At the same time, Europeans feltthat Jews were perpetual aliens, an un-welcome presence. A deadly hatred thusgrew up. The state and church kept outJews, who created a state within a stateand despised the host people. Jews alsohad their own morality–the morality of the oppressed–which gave them the au-thority of the righteous. Increasingly thereligious component of that moralityfaded, but the morality itself remained.It justified the Jews’ miserable situationas noble and superior, and fostered re-sentment of the host people.As Nietzsche writes in
