Dear Friends,
wenty-ve years ago, a phone callchanged my lie.It was 1985. Te Ms. Foundationor Women was small butmighty, each day connecting tonew organizations led by womendetermined to use their powerto transorm the lives o womenand girls. I was busy building thenascent but burgeoning movement or women’s economicdevelopment and justice. I knew about the Ms. Foundation, and knew that it was the right place or me to pursue my work—I just didn’t yet know what path would lead me intoits arms.Te answer to that question came when I took a phone callrom Marie Wilson, now my long-time colleague, and then theFoundation’s brand new executive director. She invited meto join her on a journey to catapult the economic security o women and girls, harnessing their power to create the changetheir communities yearned or. It was a journey, she said, thathad the potential to change millions o lives—not least amongthem, as it turned out, my own.How could I say no to that?I said yes! In the nearly twenty-ve years that have passed, Ihave elt enduring gratitude or the opportunity to work withthe extraordinary and passionate team o women and men thatis the Ms. Foundation or Women. In my time here, I have worked side by side with thousands o women activists and organizers. Tey know better than anyoneelse what they and their communities need, and deserve, tothrive. I have benetted beyond measure rom their wisdom, and rom the wisdom o my many colleagues at the Foundationand in the larger worlds o social justice and philanthropy. Icherish these relationships.Te Foundation has always put its trust in women, investingin social justice pioneers—especially women rom low-incomecommunities and communities o color—who have the visionand drive to ght or justice. As I prepare to leave my beloved Ms. Foundation, I know without a doubt that women hold the key—and the power—to transorm our world. Immersed in our work over all theseyears, I have witnessed, again and again, the transormationalpower o women and girls. One o my most powerulmemories will be the extraordinary courage and commitmento the women on the Gul Coast as they responded to disasterand stepped up to lead the long, arduous process o rebuildingtheir communities.I will take these deeply moving experiences, and all that I havelearned at the Ms. Foundation, into my uture work. While my decision to take this next step in my journey was not an easy one, my belie that the Ms. Foundation is poised to embracethe creativity and innovation that new leadership will bringspurred me on. As we move orward, the Ms. Foundation will do what ithas always done; lead the way orward, propelling ourinstitution—and the women’s and social justice movements—to new heights.Te Foundation’s new leader will inherit an organizationpoised to achieve great things, and will benet greatly roman inusion o resources with which to move quickly andboldly. Our Leading the Way Fund will enable the Foundationto map new pathways in a shiting landscape; pioneer work at the connection o issues, movements and constituencies;and raise awareness o our impact on, and advancement o,progressive movements. As I was invited all those years ago, I invite you, now, tolead the way with the Ms. Foundation. Please say yes to aninvestment in our Leading the Way Fund, partnering with ournew leader to create the just and sae world we all desire.Tank you, rom the bottom o my heart, or your partnershipand your riendship. Tey have meant the world to me as Ihave worked, every day, to lit up the transormational power o women and girls.Sincerely,Sara K. Gould
