EXECUTIVE SUMMERY
Non-a-days there are two mode of education available to the students. They can
choose distant education mode or regular education mode. Both the education
system has their own strong and weak points. Now-a-days students are going for
both the education system. Regular education mode demands direct interface
between teacher and students on the other hand distant education mode does not
demand direct interaction between teacher and student, students can students at
their home as they are given proper study material at their home.
The objective of the study is to know the views and attitudes of the students’
about distance and regular education mode, their quality of education provided by
different modes of education, their study material, their opportunities at the
time of employment, their cost effectiveness, reasons for joining these modes of
education and advantages and disadvantages of both the mode of education.
For this study two institute are chosen for conducting questionnaire method to get
data from the students. These institutes are Kasturi Ram College of Higher
Education Narela affiliated to Guru Govind Singh University and Kasturi Ram
International School Narela and students of different universities pursuing their
higher education through distance learning.

INTRODUCTION
The study on “A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF EDUCATIONAL PREFERENCES AMONG YOUTH –
REGULAR Vs DISTANT MODE” discusses about the attitude of the students regarding
there level of preference in distant and regular education mode a conducting study
on one regular college, one distant education institute or university and one
school upto 12 class.
The questionnaire was developed with a view to know the attitudes, opinions and
experiences of the learners of both the systems, specifically with reference to
quality aspect. The quality aspect consists of many dimensions like the content of
the study material, academic approach of the system, delivery of the programme,
examinations, etc. The main idea is to know about the current trends, opinion of
learners, their concern for quality of education, their mindset for paying the
cost of learning etc.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study examines the attitudes, perceptions and their views towards distant
education and regular education. Which system of education is more popular among
students and what they would like to adopt for their higher education. The study
also states the reasons for adopting regular or distant education.

THEORETICAL FRAME WORK OF THE STUDY

Education is a life long process. It does not stop at any particular age.
Education is very essential part of our life. Education provides us knowledge not
only about a particular subject or theories but also provide some facts and ideas
about our real life and practical life. Education is necessary for every person
whether he is working or not and or any age.
There are two methods of education
1. Regular education mode or traditional education mode
2. Distant education mode
REGULAR EDUCATION MODE
Regular education mode is a traditional way of education. Regular education mode
as we all know is the mode of study in the traditional classrooms. It is also
called continuing education system because the students have to go the classrooms
regularly. Students have to go the place of study and there is direct interaction
between teacher and student.
Indian society is one where right from Guru-shishya parampara to the era of
Independent India, face to face education has ruled the culture.
Important features of Regular Education Mode
1. Education is class room based.
2. Direct interaction between teacher and student.
3. Regular updating of course of study.
4. More teacher dependent mode of education.
5. Inflexible timing – the students of regular education mode does not have
time for extra activities like extra courses and job to earn money.
6. Fixed schedule of study – in regular education system students have to study
according to the schedule of the course which is normally called lesson plan. This
schedule is decided by the school or university. So the process of study goes
according to the schedule.

DISTANT EDUCATION MODE

But there is another mode of education that is distant education mode

The novel ideas of learning through distance and supporting financially one’s own
education process are new /fresh to the society. Distance education, as the name
suggests, is a method of implementing education to students living in distant
places.
The Open University which provides distance education can be regarded as an
important educational innovation. The concept of distant education has given
opportunity to larger section of the society by utilizing new communication
technology. This section of people of the society does not have access to the
educational institutes of regular education for higher education.
Realizing the importance of distance education, a number of counties have set up
Open Universities in the U.K., West Germany, Spain, USA, etc. India is also one of
them.
During the nineteenth century, in the United States, several activities in adult
education preceded the organization of university extension beyond campuses. In
1873, Anna Ticknor created the society to encourage studies at home for the
purpose of educational opportunities for women of all classes in the society.
Printed materials sent through the mail were the main way of communication,
teaching, and learning.
Correspondence study has grown in popularity, acceptance, and effectiveness. In
1915, creation of the National University Extension Association (NUEA) broadened
the focus to other issues, such as necessity of new pedagogical models and new
national level guidelines, such as university policies regarding acceptance of
credit from correspondence courses, credit transferal, and standard quality for
correspondence educators.
India is also widening its wings in providing distant education. In India the
importance of distance education is obvious in view of widespread illiteracy,
inequalities in education and lack of high quality in education. No wonder, the
seventh Plan attaches tremendous importance to distance education through the Open
Universities. In fact, distance education is being envisioned as an alternative
system of education in the country.
The four Open universities in India are as follows:
1. Open university of Andhra Pradesh- it has been functioning for the just six
years.
2. Indra Gandhi National Open University – it is a University of national
level. It was established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament.
3. Kota Open University in Rajasthan.
4. Nalanda Open University in Bihar.
Inspite of these governmental institutions of distance education system there are
many other universities also which are emerging as open universities like School
of Open learning Delhi University, M D University, and Guru Govind Singh
Indraprestha University etc.
Important features of the Open University
1. Relaxed entry regulations – it does not debar a student from studying on
account of lack of formal qualification.
2. Self-pacing – one can study according to one’s own pace and convenience.
3. Transfer of credits from one program to another and from one univ ersity to
another, either conventional or non-conventional.
4. Education is home-based and not class room based.
5. Quality of teaching is high because it taps the best expertise available in
the country for preparing its educational programmes.
6. It offers not only degree, diploma and certificate courses but also other
programmes such as extension, enrichment, community-oriented and continuing
education.
7. Instead of depending only on the teacher for teaching, communication
technology is used to provide multi-media teaching.

MEDIA IN OPEN UNIVERSITIES

Previously, it was possible to practice distance learning only through the mail.
However, in recent times, with the help of technological advancements, these
programs are also available online. Distance learning is beneficial to those
students who not only wish to complete higher studies but also need to earn a
living at the same time. It is also ideal for those who can study only part-time,
as they may be busy with other activities. Education is imparted through
correspondence and communication between the institution and the pupil. Distance
learning makes the task of achieving the desired course of education easier while
sitting at your home. In distance learning, you do not have the advantage of
receiving personal attention and guidance of a teacher or a professor as in a
regular school. Instead you need to study on your own. The educational institution
supplies all the required educational material, resources and references. This
correspondence will help you to stay in touch and move in pace with the activities
and course of studies of other students attending regular schools and colleges.
The institution usually provides an entire range of books, audio and visual aids
such as tapes and CDs where you have enrolled.
The school level study is mostly preferred to be done by regular education mode,
but after school level student can choose distant education or regular education
mode for further studies like for graduation and post graduation. As the
competition is all around all the student want to have all kind of knowledge and
experience so most of the students prefer distant education mode rather than
regular education mode as regular education mode provide them only bookish
knowledge and does not allow then to work while studying.

There are many courses like traditional courses like B.COM, B.A., B.Sc., M.A.,
M.COM, M.Sc. etc. and many professional courses like B.B.A., M.B.A., B.C.A.,
M.C.A., B.Tech. , M.Tech., B.E. etc. offered by different institutions,
university, schools and colleges. Now-a-days students are more conscious about
there career matters. They want to choose the best alternative in their life when
it comes to education decisions. The regular education mode provide them proper
interaction with teachers to solve their daily study related problems, on the
other hand distant education mode provide them time to do other activities and get
experience side by side so that they can make their CV more impressive.

Open universities, which have been set up in different parts of the world are in
varying stage of development. As a result, we come across a variety of media used
by them.
Various media used by Distant Education Provider i.e. Open Universities are as
follows:
1. Print material – Print material is the basic or more used media for
instructional purposes in Open Universities. It is used on large scale by these
universities. The teacher has not seen his students and has no mental picture of
them. The material is carefully prepared to suit them all and to help them learn
on their own without much assistance from others. Example – UK Open University,
Fern Universitat (West Germany), the STOU (Thailand) and IGNOU.
2. Broadcasting - Radio and Television broadcasts are also used to interact
with students and get them acquainted with the study material. Programmes are
transmitted at fixed times. In distance education, radio has been used as an
important component of multi-media approach. The advantage of the radio is that
all over the world it is within the reach of the common man, and can be carried
from place to place easily. IGNOU is planning to set up their broadcasts
programmes for their students. Television is mostly used media. Everyone watch
television so it can be used for teaching purposes. The disadvantage of the
television as educational media is that the programmes on television are
uninterruptable and are presented at the same pace for all students.
3. Audio and video Cassettes – audio and video cassettes have the advantage of
storage and use, according to the time and convenience of the students.
Interest regarding the effectiveness of correspondence study verses traditional
study was the subject of debates and discussions. Watkins (1991) in her book cited
that Vincent (1885) wrote,
“The day is coming when the work done by correspondence will be greater in amount
than that done in the classrooms of our academics and colleges; when the students
who shall recite by correspondence will far outnumber those who make oral
recitations.”

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

• To find out the attitudes students about self-financed and distance
education mode.
• To know about their opinion about quality aspect of the system they have
chosen.
• To comparatively study the role of regular and distant education system in
order to give higher education.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The reach of the study is limited to Narela area. In the study institutions chosen
for the data collection purpose are Kasturi Ram College of Higher Education and
Kasturi Ram International School and many institutions that provide distance
education like IGNOU, Delhi University, and other Open Universities. This study
reveals the attitudes of the students about the mode of education available in
this present environment. This study puts light on the popularity of mode of
education i.e. which is the most preferred mode of education – Regular or
Distance.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

• Some students showed no interest in giving information.
• Due to time and resource constraint for both sides (researcher and
respondent), the study is limited to only Narela area.
• Many of the students were not fully aware of the importance and negative
aspect of distant learning and regular learning.
• Lack of technology familiarity among students so they are not aware of the
technological advancement in the field of distant education.
