EXECUTIVE SUMMERY
Non-a-days there are two mode of education available to the students. They can
choose distant education mode or regular education mode. Both the education
system has their own strong and weak points. Now-a-days students are going for
both the education system. Regular education mode demands direct interface
between teacher and students on the other hand distant education mode does not
demand direct interaction between teacher and student, students can students at
their home as they are given proper study material at their home.
The objective of the study is to know the views and attitudes of the students’
about distance and regular education mode, their quality of education provided by
different modes of education, their study material, their opportunities at the
time of employment, their cost effectiveness, reasons for joining these modes of
education and advantages and disadvantages of both the mode of education.
For this study two institute are chosen for conducting questionnaire method to get
data from the students. These institutes are Kasturi Ram College of Higher
Education Narela affiliated to Guru Govind Singh University and Kasturi Ram
International School Narela and students of different universities pursuing their
higher education through distance learning.
INTRODUCTION
The study on “A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF EDUCATIONAL PREFERENCES AMONG YOUTH –
REGULAR Vs DISTANT MODE” discusses about the attitude of the students regarding
there level of preference in distant and regular education mode a conducting study
on one regular college, one distant education institute or university and one
school upto 12 class.
The questionnaire was developed with a view to know the attitudes, opinions and
experiences of the learners of both the systems, specifically with reference to
quality aspect. The quality aspect consists of many dimensions like the content of
the study material, academic approach of the system, delivery of the programme,
examinations, etc. The main idea is to know about the current trends, opinion of
learners, their concern for quality of education, their mindset for paying the
cost of learning etc.
There are many courses like traditional courses like B.COM, B.A., B.Sc., M.A.,
M.COM, M.Sc. etc. and many professional courses like B.B.A., M.B.A., B.C.A.,
M.C.A., B.Tech. , M.Tech., B.E. etc. offered by different institutions,
university, schools and colleges. Now-a-days students are more conscious about
there career matters. They want to choose the best alternative in their life when
it comes to education decisions. The regular education mode provide them proper
interaction with teachers to solve their daily study related problems, on the
other hand distant education mode provide them time to do other activities and get
experience side by side so that they can make their CV more impressive.
Open universities, which have been set up in different parts of the world are in
varying stage of development. As a result, we come across a variety of media used
by them.
Various media used by Distant Education Provider i.e. Open Universities are as
follows:
1. Print material – Print material is the basic or more used media for
instructional purposes in Open Universities. It is used on large scale by these
universities. The teacher has not seen his students and has no mental picture of
them. The material is carefully prepared to suit them all and to help them learn
on their own without much assistance from others. Example – UK Open University,
Fern Universitat (West Germany), the STOU (Thailand) and IGNOU.
2. Broadcasting - Radio and Television broadcasts are also used to interact
with students and get them acquainted with the study material. Programmes are
transmitted at fixed times. In distance education, radio has been used as an
important component of multi-media approach. The advantage of the radio is that
all over the world it is within the reach of the common man, and can be carried
from place to place easily. IGNOU is planning to set up their broadcasts
programmes for their students. Television is mostly used media. Everyone watch
television so it can be used for teaching purposes. The disadvantage of the
television as educational media is that the programmes on television are
uninterruptable and are presented at the same pace for all students.
3. Audio and video Cassettes – audio and video cassettes have the advantage of
storage and use, according to the time and convenience of the students.
Interest regarding the effectiveness of correspondence study verses traditional
study was the subject of debates and discussions. Watkins (1991) in her book cited
that Vincent (1885) wrote,
“The day is coming when the work done by correspondence will be greater in amount
than that done in the classrooms of our academics and colleges; when the students
who shall recite by correspondence will far outnumber those who make oral
recitations.”
