1.“ESCARPMENT”INT. SMALL BUS, SCOTLAND – DAYPOYA and RICHELLE are sitting on an otherwise empty localbus winding its way alongside impressive hills and brownslopes, leading up steeply to high mountain peaks. They are dressed in full hiking gear, with heavy boots andjam-packed North Face style backpacks resting in front ofthem.Poya is sitting by the window staring outwards at the view.Richelle is reading a book and occasionally glancing up atPoya, and in the direction he is looking out the window. She is reading a page about half way through the book, heavily annotated with lines highlighted, words underlinedand lots of notes in the margin. The bus turns a corner and a large peak rises into viewabout a kilometer or so away. Richelle peers up from herbook and points out the window.RICHELLELook.She returns her gaze back down to her book, excited, andruns her fingers along a line.RICHELLEThat’s it. It’s just as you describedhere: “A hulk of rock rising from thecoast to the clouds; an impassiveLeviathan, brown and scrubby at theroots, black and angular at the tips.”She lightly presses Poya’s leg and leans in towards him. Hecontinues to stare out the window.RICHELLEI mean, its just as you described it … what I don’t understand is how youcould have imagined it so perfectly, having never seen this place before?Poya turns slightly to address her.POYA(
