Description

There has been a tradition in some areas of the United Kingdom, especially
Scotland, for archaeologists to work as self employed individuals. Some
commercial companies that have grown up in these areas have continued this
tradition; others have turned against this practice.
Individuals acting in a self-employed manner submit invoices on completion of
work (or perhaps more frequently) and are paid gross of Tax and National
Insurance. The individual must manage their own tax returns, prepare
accounts and complete self-assessment tax forms. Employees have tax and
national insurance removed at source, by their employers, and they should
have: contracts of employment; leave entitlement; and other benefits.

mmmm. as a self employed archaeologist i would just like to ask... what planet does u nit of 1 live on? cos it's not the same as the rest of us. tools well if we don't buy them who will, insurance depends on where and for whome you are sub contracting and what the hell is all this about grants, subsidies and imortal organisations.the real world consists of developers, competition sadly alot of really awful county mounties. it's damn hard work to get employment of any kind in archaeology so if you've got employment stick with it if not good luck. dmama

I think that what BAJR fails to see is that to be self employed one must question the necessity of having insurance, tools etc and where they are found necessary pass those costs onto the client. What you would notice is that when one goes off to compete (fully) as an archaeologist that the majority of the competition is working under a set of grants and subsidies, exemptions from taxation and within spurious immortal organisations where the identity of the archaeologist has been compromised. Giving up our council job are we….uNitof1

What the fabled Unit of One fails to see is to be self employed one must have insurance, tools, take risk for the job, be involved in the process etc etc... It is possible, but not often.

Unit of One - your opinions are valued - even when they are wrong.

This document is really rubbish. A professional archaeologist earns their money by their knowledge and as such is eminently self-employable. I think that this document brings archaeology into disrepute because it suggests that archaeology is “traditionally” breaking the law in various areas of the country where self-employed people work. Would they like to say where these traditions of “perpetuating a tax and
National Insurance avoidance scheme” occur? The criteria presented are spurious and should be ignored.
