15
and let them be for lights in the expanseof the heavens to give light on the earth.”And it came to be so.
16
And Elohim made two great lights: thegreater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars.
17
And Elohim set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
18
and to rule over the day and over thenight, and to separate the light from thedarkness. And Elohim saw that it wasgood.
19
And there came to be evening and therecame to be morning, the fourth day.
20
And Elohim said, “Let the waters teemwith shoals of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth on the face of theexpanse of the heavens.”

26
And Elohim said, “Let Us make man inOur image, according to Our likeness, andlet them rule over the fish of the sea, andover the birds of the heavens, and over thelivestock, and over all the earth and over all the creeping creatures that creep on theearth.”
27
And Elohim created the man in Hisimage, in the image of Elohim He createdhim – male and female He created them.
28
And Elohim blessed them, and Elohimsaid to them, “Bear fruit and increase, andfill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of theheavens, and over all creatures moving onthe earth.”
29
And Elohim said, “See, I have givenyou every plant that yields seed which ison the face of all the earth, and every treewhose fruit yields seed, to you it is for food.
30
“And to every beast of the earth, and toevery bird of the heavens, and to everycreeping creature on the earth, in whichthere is life, every green plant is for food.”And it came to be so.
31
And Elohim saw all that He had made, and see, it was very good. And there cameto be evening and there came to be morn-ing, the sixth day.
2
Thus the heavensand the earth werecompleted, and all their array.
2
And on the seventh day Elohim com- pleted His work which He had done, andHe rested on the seventh day from all Hiswork which He had made.
3
And Elohim blessed the seventh dayand set it apart, because on it He restedfrom all His work which Elohim in creat-ing had made.
4
These are the births of the heavens andthe earth when they were created, in theday that
HWHY
Elohim made earth and heav-ens.
5
Now no shrub of the field was yet onthe earth, and no plant of the field had yetsprung up, for
HWHY
Elohim had not sentrain on the earth, and there was no man totill the ground,
6
but a mist went up from the earth andwatered the entire surface of the ground.
7
And
HWHY
Elohim formed the man outof dust from the ground, and breathed intohis nostrils breath of life. And the man became a living being.
8
And
HWHY
Elohim planted a garden inÂÅen, to the east, and there He put the manwhom He had formed.
9
And out of the ground
HWHY
Elohimmade every tree grow that is pleasant to thesight and good for food, with the tree of life in the midst of the garden and the treeof the knowledge of good and evil.
10
And a river went out of ÂÅen to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four riverheads.
11
The name of the first is Pishon, it is the one surrounding the entire land of Àawilah, where there is gold.
12
And the gold of that land is good.Bdellium is there, and the shoham stone.
13
And the name of the second river isGiÁon, it is the one surrounding the entireland of Kush.
14
And the name of the third river is Àid-deqel, it is the one which goes toward theeast of Ashshur. And the fourth river is theEuphrates.
15
And
HWHY
Elohim took the man and puthim in the garden of ÂÅen to work it and toguard it.
16
And
HWHY
Elohim commanded the man, saying, “Eat of every tree of the garden,
17
but do not eat of the tree of the knowl-edge of good and evil, for in the day thatyou eat of it you shall certainly die.”
18
And
HWHY
Elohim said, “It is not goodfor the man to be alone, I am going tomake a helper for him, as his counterpart.”
19
And from the ground
HWHY
Elohimformed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens, and brought them tothe man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called each livingcreature, that was its name.
20
So the man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the heavens, and toevery beast of the field. But for the man
BERÂSHITH 12

there was not found a helper for him, as hiscounterpart.
21
So
HWHY
Elohim caused a deep sleep tofall on the man, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh inits place.
22
And the rib which
HWHY
Elohim hadtaken from the man He made into awoman, and He brought her to the man.
23
And the man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. This oneis called ‘woman,’ because she was takenout of man.”
24
For this cause a man shall leave hisfather and mother, and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25
And they were both naked, the man andhis wife, yet they were not ashamed.
3
And the serpent was more crafty thanany beast of the field which
HWHY
Elohim had made, and he said to thewoman, “Is it true that Elohim has said,‘Do not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2
And the woman said to the serpent,“We are to eat of the fruit of the trees of thegarden,
3
but of the fruit of the tree which is inthe midst of the garden, Elohim has said,‘Do not eat of it, nor touch it, lest youdie.
4
And the serpent said to the woman,“You shall certainly not die.
5
“For Elohim knows that in the day youeat of it your eyes shall be opened, and youshall be like Elohim, knowing good andevil.”
6
And the woman saw that the tree wasgood for food, that it was pleasant to theeyes, and a tree desirable to make onewise, and she took of its fruit and ate. Andshe also gave to her husband with her, andhe ate.
7
Then the eyes of both of them wereopened, and they knew that they werenaked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made loin coverings for themselves.
8
And they heard the sound of
HWHY
Elohim walking about in the garden in thecool of the day, and AÅam and his wife hidthemselves from the presence of
HWHY
Elohim among the trees of the garden.
9
And
HWHY
Elohim called unto AÅamand said to him, “Where are you?”
10
And he said, “I heard Your voice in thegarden, and I was afraid because I wasnaked, so I hid myself.”
11
And He said, “Who made you knowthat you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you thatyou should not eat?”
12
And the man said, “The woman whomYou gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I ate.”
13
And
HWHY
Elohim said to the woman,“What is this you have done?” And thewoman said, “The serpent deceived me,and I ate.”
14
And
HWHY
Elohim said to the serpent,“Because you have done this, you arecursed more than all livestock and morethan every beast of the field. On your bellyyou are to go, and eat dust all the days of your life.
15
“And I put enmity between you and thewoman, and between your seed and her Seed.
b
He shall crush your head, and youshall crush His heel.”
16
To the woman He said, “I greatlyincrease your sorrow and your conception – bring forth children in pain. And your desire is for your husband, and he doesrule over you.”
17
And to the man He said, “Because youhave listened to the voice of your wife, andhave eaten of the tree of which I com-manded you, saying, ‘Do not eat of it’:“Cursed is the ground because of you, intoil you are to eat of it all the days of your life,
18
and
the ground
shall bring forth thornsand thistles for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19
“By the sweat of your face you are toeat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are,and to dust you return.”
20
And the man called his wife’s name
