ThiS
small book began life as a
Dhamma
talk given
in
theThai language. After I had edited the transcribed version it wasprinted
in
Thailand under the title
Lak Rak.
One of the readersof that book, Varangkana Lamsam, found it useful and decidedthat she would like to arrange the printing
of an
English version
as
a gift
of
Dhamma
to fellow lay Buddhists. Her cousin PimkaeoSundaravej, who had received the book from her, translated
it.
For my part I have edited the manuscript and clarified somepoints of
Dhamma
that I feel were a little vague
in
my ownoriginal discourse. I would like to express my appreciation ofthe efforts of both Varangkana and Pimkaeo to make this bookpossible.May the virtues
of
the Triple Gem guide and protect allwho read this book.

project began

personal one for
me.
Last year, mydear cousin Varangkana Lamsam gave
me
a copy of AjahnJayasaro's book
Lak Rak,
the Thai version of this book. 1 haveadmired many of Ajahn Jayasaro's books before, but this onemade
me
feel
as
if it had been written especially to guide
me
atthat point
in
my life. I was so touched that I resolved
to
trans-late it to English one day to share privately with
my
two sons,who might not grow up to have a deep enough understandingof the Thai language to appreciate this treasure fully. Uponhearing this plan,
my
cousin expressed the desire to publish aformal translation
as
there are many others who would benefitfrom
an
English version. With the assistance of our friend UmaDebhakam, we were able to seek Ajahn Jayasaro's permissionand what started out as a vague idea quickly became a reality.There are many without whom this translation wouldnot have been possible, and I wish to thank them here:
