INTRODUCTION

 Santiago Calatrava Valls (born July 28, 1951)

is an internationally recognized and award-
winning Valencian Spanish architect, sculptor
and structural engineer whose principal office
is in Zurich, Switzerland.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
 Calatrava is a prolific sculptor and painter,
claiming that the practice of architecture
combines all the arts into one.
 His style is very personal and derives from
numerous studies he makes of the human body
and the natural world.

 Calatrava is mainly inspired by skeletal forms

which is clearly visible in his works
 Buildings of Calatrava seem to have a certain
element of motion, having a life of their own
 Buildings are striking because of their
aerodynamic shapes and massiveness.
 Calatrava’s style has been heralded as
bridging the division between structural
engineering and architecture
 His works also show inspirations from living
objects,their behavior and action
 Calatrava being a prolific sculptor also
resembles his buildings to his sculptures
Athens olympic sports complex
THE STADIUM
 The Stadium roof covers a surface of some
25,000 square meters (269,098 square feet).
The bearing structure of each leaf is
comprised of double-tied arches made of
tubular steel, which span 304 meters (997
feet) and rise to a height of 60 meters (197
feet).
The Olympic Stadium is covered with a roof
of laminated glass, composed of a pair of
bent "leaves," capable of reflecting up to
90% of the sunlight.
THE VELODROME
 The Velodrome roof structure is
composed of two 45 meter high
arches, weighing 4,000 tons, from
which the glass and steel roof
is hanging.
Four entrance plazas provides ceremonial
access to the Complex. Each entrance gate is
roofed with a vaulted steel canopy, which
provides the public with a clear identifying
element for the complex. When illuminated at
night, these canopies serve both as orientation
devices and as attractions in themselves.
THE NATIONS’ WALL
 The Nations Wall is a tubular steel wall
sculpture, designed to move in a wavelike
motion, creating a pleasing effect of light and
shadow over the central circulation spine and
the Plaza of the Nations. The Nations Wall
can also serve as a giant video screen.
 In addition, there are new warm-up areas for
athletes, improvement of pedestrian bridges,
connections to public transportation, parking
areas and bus terminals, as well as the design of
the installations and infrastructure for all
elements.
 All structures have been designed so that they
can be prefabricated off-piste in large measure,
reducing the need for onsite personnel and
equipment and minimizing interference with
other construction work on the existing
buildings.
THE MILWAUKEE ART
MUSEUM
 The Museum's main entrance leads into a
parabolic-shaped, glass enclosed reception
hall with a 90 foot ceiling.
 The Burke Brise Soleil, the movable, wing-like
sun screen comprised of 72 steel fins, rests on
top of the glass-enclosed reception hall and is
raised and lowered to control both
temperature and light in the structure.
 With fins ranging in length from 26 feet to
105 feet, the Brise Soleil wingspan spreads
217 feet at its widest point, wider than a
Boeing 747-400 airplane, and weights 90
tons.
THE REIMAN BRIDGE

engineering and architecture
