ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OFACADEMICA SINICA.
Academia Sinica is keen to address the specific interests of our international colleagues. By establishing ASICC we hope to offer a dynamic environment and ensure a strong work/life balance.
If you haven’t noticed already, the 2010International Flora Expo is underway inTaipei. The Flore Expo is an officiallysanctioned event by the AssociationInternationale des Producteurs de l'Horticulture (AIPH/IAHP) and theBureau of International Expositions(BIE) as a means to showcase diverseflower and plant species from all overthe world for the general public and thehorticulture industry. The purpose of theExpo is to exhibit and display newgardening and environmental protectiontechnology as well as combining cultureand art as parts of eco-friendly living.I must confess that until I moved toTaipei I was not aware of ‘FlowerExpos’ or their purpose. After a littleinvestigation I found out that the‘Flower Expo’ was established in 1960when the first was held in Rotterdam.Since then 17 Expos have been hostedacross Europe, North America andAsia. The primary venue for Taipeiexhibition is at Yuanshan which isaccessible by MRT and free shuttlebus service from select locationsaround Taipei (e.g. Song Shanairport). ASICC organized a trip to theFlora Expo on December 4
. Since noone had been to this type of eventbefore we did not know what toexpect. One has to ask oneself, howexciting can flower exhibits really be?As it turned out, they can be veryexciting. There are numerous displaysfrom 50 countries and territories andspecial Pavilions which are basedaround specific themes. The Pavilionsare an additional cost and it isrecommended that you book ticketsbefore you arrive. There are numerous gardensas well as music and dance performances andfireworks displays. There are four expo sites(Yuanshan, Fine Arts, Xinsheng and Dajia)covering an area of 71 hectares so don’t expectto see everything in one day.Next term for an individual discount NanKangresidency (NT150 per person) is from Feb.14~20, 2011.
