Those of us who are interested inbaking had a phenomenal opportunitylast month. On October 12
, ASICCsponsored a baking seminar at one of our ASICC member’s homes very closeto campus. We had the opportunity tolearn from Marie Klingensmith, one of New York’s finest pastry chefs (akaJonathan and Wendy Evans’ Aunt). This workshop provided an opportunityfor us to learn some of the fine arts of baking and at the same time get to knowmore individuals in the Internationalcommunity at Academia Sinica. The participants were divided into smallgroups and each person had anopportunity to take part in making ahomemade apple pie from scratch. Itwas a lot of fun working on this projecttogether. While the apple pies werebaking, we had the excitingopportunity to learn how to make apersonal chocolate cake in just 5minutes in the microwave. Each of uswas given a coffee mug in which wemixed the ingredients for this cake andthen later microwaved it in this samemug. Following this we had theopportunity to taste our personalchocolate cakes which were simplydelicious. After a time of talking, tasting each others cakes, and sippingon hot drinks, the apple pies werefinished baking in the oven. The pieshad a lovely appearance and someeven had special pastry decorationsadded to them. Everyone parted with agenerous portion of the apple pie theyhelped bake. The pies were absolutelydelicious and much better than anystore bought pie in Taipei.
Academia Sinica is keen to address the specific interests of our international colleagues. By establishing ASICC we hope to offer a dynamic environment and ensure a strong work/life balance.
