The start
My sister Jane’s doctor told her she had high cholesterol and neededmedication to get it under control. She asked him to give her three months to get inshape instead. She had her mind set on triathlons.
The steps
Since we’re twins, wedecided to train together. At first we had no idea what we were doing. Swimmingwas our weakest skill, and our first triathlon felt like it took forever, but we crossedthe finish line together.
The payoff
Jane lost more than 20 pounds and avoidedcholesterol medication. We’re now seasoned triathletes and in the best shape of our lives. Nothing beats the feeling of crossing that finish line. It deepens ourconnection. We knew we had to do it—not for anyone else, but for ourselves.

The start
After retirement, my husband and I discoveredwe love to travel. We’ve even taken on activities together, likefly-fishing, cycling, and aerobics. But as much as I love workingout with him, my real passion is being with my friends in theHillside Hike Bikers, a group I started.
The steps
I got intohiking when I decided to take a trip around Alaska that wouldrequire a lot of activity. It hasn’t always been easy on mybody, which has wanted to give up at times. We hike everyTuesday and cycle every Friday. I’ve kept it up despite two kneereplacements, a spinal fusion, some arthritis, and even cancer.
The payoff
I can’t imagine my life without hiking and cycling. The camaraderie and friendship with the gals is important tome, and it’s relaxing. It keeps us connected to our youth. As a bonus, my husband cleans the house for me whileI’m off in the mountains. I still cook, though!
