Meeting Minutes

OHSU Student Council


12/10/10, 12:10 – 1:00pm
Location: BRB 381

I. Welcome/Food/Drinks (10 minutes)

III. Services Updates (50 minutes)
a. Student health (Derek Musashe):
i. Flu shots:
 Student health wants 80% of the student body to be immunized with the flu
vaccine (less than 50% are right now)
 Flu immunizations are available at the Student Health Center for FREE!!
ii. Student health is taking over the former medical photography building
 Hoping to use that space to expand their counseling services
 Should be ready by February, but plan is to have the new space ready NLT
April, 2011. 
 Renovating their current space should be ready by the end of August
iii. Next year’s health insurance policy:
 Aetna can’t increase the rates by more than 13.5% if no changes are made
 Soliciting student body feedback through Survey Monkey (should be sent out
in Jan. or Feb.)
 Inquiry into what our insurance rates would be if prescriptions co-pays were
lowered from $15 (the current amount) to $10 or $7
 Inquiry into what our insurance rates would be if deductible was raised to
$500
iv. Student health is trying to become a gatekeeper for all referrals
 All students are highly encouraged to go to Student Health first if they need to
be referred to a specialist.  This is a huge cost saving step that Student Health
is trying to implement.  It should have a direct effect on the rates you pay in
the future.

b. Student center (Karen Seresun):


i. Design and construction are in the permit review stage for relocation of bookstore
 In discussion with fire marshal, wants a detailed emergency plan
 Still on track for a construction start date in early Feb
 Design and construction re: games space or replacing gym floor
 Depends on how much it costs to relocate bookstore
 Should be able to do it (fairly cheap; just painting and new doors, etc – no
furnishing)
 Saturday attendance has generally been low (16-30)
 Good attendance is 200-250 (week day attendance)
 Please continue to encourage people to come in!
ii. Holiday hours:
 Dec 20 – Jan 1, M-W: 6-9
 Closed Dec 24, 25, 31, 1
c. March Wellness (Joan Feraco)
i. Just completed the annual membership survey, no results yet
ii. Holiday hours:
Dec 24, 31, Jan 1: 7-1
Dec 25: closed

d. Library (Laura Zeigan)


i. Trying to implement a “librarians come to you” initiative
 Laura will be at the student center from 11-1 on Mondays
 There will be one stationed in nursing 628, 10am -2pm
 Library is looking for new places that would be convenient to visit a
librarian
ii. Usability testing is ongoing for new components of the website
 If the new widget doesn’t show up in your browser, they’d love to know

e. Incidental fees (Charlie Muraki)


i. Trying to set up an effective feedback mechanism for students to comment on the
fees and what they should be used for
ii. Tentative Schedule for IF Review group:
 Monday, Jan 10, 12:00 - Meet to review questions for the Survey
Monkey survey and individual school input meetings.  Send in your
suggested questions before the meeting to be summarized
 Friday, Jan 21 - finish collecting input from the survey
 Monday, Jan 31, 12:00 - review input and generate recommendations
 Friday, Feb 11 - present recommendations to OHSU Student Council
 Monday, Feb 28 - forward recommendations to Dr. Robertson

f. Legislative (Kirsten Williams)


i. Student policy workshop is gearing up
 Jan 22 9:30-3:30
 At School of Nursing
 Fliers should be up after Christmas
 Coffee, doughnuts, lunch will be provided
 Hoping for at least 50 people
ii. Trying to coordinate with Oregon Academy of Physicians for a meet ‘n greet
iii. March 7 is the Oregon Academy Physicians lobby day
 Looking for med students for that day
iv. OMA lobby day is March 14
v. Looking for all-student representation for something in late Feb / early March

IV. School Updates


a. PA:
b. Nursing:
i. World AIDS Day, Dec 1st
Organized by Kelly Nickerson, to commemorate the theme of universal access
and human rights and promote the Light for Rights campaign
ii. Dec 3rd Blood Drive
Went really well, 21 good units of blood on a goal of 20
Next Drive is March 15th
c. Medical:
i. CTUW organization is ongoing
d. Dental: February 2011 events:
Celebration of Smiles at Children’s Museum
Give Kids a Smile Day at OHSU SOD – Friday, Feb 25
e. GSO: Ski Trip
i. 5 days over Presidents’ Day weekend
ii. Have about 50 people signed up
i. About 6 will attend both ski trips
iii. Suggestion: we can combine the trips in the future?
i. Or at least have a day or two of overlap

V. Activities Updates
a. Intramurals (Heather Ennis):
i. Had about 300 participants this last term
ii. Winter leagues start Jan 28, registration around Jan 10
iii. Student center will show Duck/Auburn bowl game on Jan 10
iv. Jan 15: 3v3 basketball tournament (in the works)

b. Exec council met with Dr Robertson


i. “Funding from the state for OHSU’s student academic programs is likely to
continue decreasing”
i. This means that in-state and out-of-state tuition will be very close to equal
ii. There will still be a preference given to in-state students, but the cost
difference between in-&out-of-state is expected to decrease
ii. School of Medicine and part of School of Dentistry will be moving down to the
waterfront
i. Groundbreaking for that building will start next fall
ii. Should be done around 2014

c. Ski trip (Jesse Hollander/Kristin Belford)


i. Checks should be in today
ii. Contract with Sun River should be settled by next week
iii. In the next week, we’ll send out an email to people who’ve signed up about
where/when to check in, etc
iv. Lift ticket prices should be $49-55
i. Should get a discounted rate, but may only apply to OHSU students
ii. Can’t get them ahead of time

d. Official roster request from (Charlie Muraki)


i. We officially have voting members and nonvoting attendees
ii. When we’re discussing more controversial funding options, we need to know who
is actually representing each given school and who can proxy for absent members
iii. Charlie will send out another request email to the SC group
