DIY Origami Book

The original of this book was made for my great nephew a few years ago. I kept scanned copies
of the collaged pages and recreated it for the daughter of former colleagues. Five years later at
a seminar, they told me that their daughter still plays with the book and is fascinated with origami.

Because this work seemed so engaging (both to make and to play with), I decided to share the
pages with some instructions on how to make your own. To recreate the book you will need to:

1. Print the pages in colour on good quality paper, preferably card. You will need a printer that
prints to the edges of the page. You can think about mounting the pages on card or using
colour photocopies of the prints.
2. Trim the pages to size if necessary (21cm x 20cm)
3. There is a pocket on each page - you need to make a new pocket out of paper and paste
it in place covering the image - either fold paper to make a simple pocket or use a small
envelop
4. The animals live in the pockets until it is time to come out and play. Origami instructions
are readily available online for free (e.g. http://www.origami-instructions.com) or books can
be purchased. However, if you cannot find the instructions or do not wish to make the
animals, I have included images of the animals. You can cut them out - it’s probably a good
idea to mount them on some card.
5. Think about creating and include your own pages
6. Assemble the pages. Please discard this page and the animal cut-out pages
7. Bind (it’s easy with a plastic or wire comb binder) or use/make a folder. A 1cm margin is
on the left hand edge of each page for binding.

If you and your children enjoy this book, please let others know about it and share it. Give it as a
gift or just pass on the Scribd URL.
