Neill spent twenty years as a missionary in southern india, where he eventually became Bishop of tinnevelly. He returned to Europe because of ill health and became Professor of Missions and Ecumenical Theology at the University of Hamburg. From 1979 until his death in 1934 he was Assistant Bishop in the diocese of Oxford.
