Basic Qualities of a Health Care
Practitioner
1. Self-knowledge and Self acceptance
Self – is a mysterious, enigmatic being rich in
potentialities and actualities, strengths and
weaknesses, positives and negatives
2. Pure and Clean Motivations
Motivations – can be brought about by several
factors such as pressing needs of the person,
what the society demands (both local and abroad),
ancestral and parental influences, and the like
which may have or may not have anything to do
with what the person ought to intend pursuant to
the knowledge of himself
Activity:
a. What made me decide to take up the course in health care?
 
b. What (and who) are the factors that contribute to my decision-making to
take up the course?
 
c. If my decision can be quantified from the scale of one to ten (1-10), with
ten (10) being the highest, how much would come from my personal
realization and conviction? Explain

d. Do I really like it as a whole? (Yes or No)


 
e. What is it in the course that I like the most? Why?
 
f. What is it in the course that I dislike the most? Why?
 
 
g. If I were to weigh things: what would I prefer to embrace: that which I like
the most or that which I dislike the most in my course? Why?
 
h. What are the reasons why I believe I am for the career I have chosen?
 
i. Deep within myself, am I really happy about the course I am taking up?
Why? Why not?
 
j. If my sense of happiness can be quantified on a scale of one to ten (1-10),
with ten (10) being the highest, how happy am I? Explain?
 
k. If I am happy/unhappy, what do I have to do now? What firm decision
should I make?

1. One’s chosen profession is in harmony with God-
given talents, interests and resources; values and
attitudes; and needs
2. His decision is a product of thorough reflective
discernment and realization on the profession that
is chosen
3. He has that inner sense of peace and happiness
with the decisions he has made
Virtues of a Strong Will and
Determination
Virtues – are important ingredients of a
strong will and determination

d. courage
e. Self-mastery (Temperance)
4. Service-Orientedness
Service - is of the essence in a profession
Profession– is an occupation that is meant to
be of service to humanity
5. Intellectual, Moral, and Clinical Wisdom
6. Propensity for Continuous Learning
Education – is a continuous, lifetime process of
learning, of being molded, of being formed
7. Empathic Presence
