From the Librarian’s Pen….

Welcome to the second issue of SFIT Library Newsletter!!

“Reading” is gaining attention these days. Firstly, 23rd. April is celebrated every
year as World Book and Copyright Day and secondly, its vacation time. We
always want our children to become avid readers every vacation!
As UNESCO mentions - World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated 23rd.
April; a symbolic date for world literature, for on this date and in the same year
of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also
the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon,
K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a
natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to
books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young
people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the
irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural
progress of humanity.

The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint
George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold. The
success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend primarily on the
support received from all parties concerned (authors, publishers, teachers,
librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass
media), who have been mobilized in each country by UNESCO National
Commissions, UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations, Associated Schools
and Libraries, and by all those who feel motivated to work together in this world
celebration of books and authors.

Happy Reading and Enjoy Your Vacations!!

SFIT Library gets better….

SFIT library has taken a dive in the deep waters of the WWW. We have
rightly recognized the power of the WWW and are already providing e-
services to our patrons. This includes mailing alerts of conferences and
seminars, book exhibitions and other interesting and relevant news items.
We are also into blogging these days. You can follow our blog at:
http://sfitlibrary.blogspot.com
The Library has identified certain themes for every month keeping in
mind the National / International Days. A display of books and
information pertaining to it is organized and all staff members are
informed about it through e-mails.
Staff members of SFIT are offered additional privileges (for book
borrowing) from the year 2010.
Also, first three SFIT toppers (students) are offered Scholar’s Cards to
enable them to avail the library facility more effectively.

Help with Citing and Referencing

You know the feeling. You’ve spent months preparing that project report and
now it has got a final look. But wait, this is yet not the end..you still have to write
that long list of references.
No one really enjoys writing references but they are vital to scholarly research
and help you avoid the plagiarism trap. The library is here to help make
referencing easier.
We have downloaded the following referencing styles from the related websites
websites:

ƒ APA: psychology, education, and other social sciences.

ƒ MLA: literature, arts, and humanities.
ƒ IEEE: for IEEE journals, transactions and letters
