Introduction
Background
The Facilities Management Unit is responsible for ensuring that corporate
standards are maintained in the development and implementation of all signage
across the University.
The manual provides clearly defined signage instructions for the design,
development and installation of standardised signage on all campuses of the
University.
Purpose
The purpose of the Campus Signage Manual is to provide tools and processes
for the development and implementation of all University signage.
This has ensured that the delivery of services to our stakeholders is enhanced
through the appropriate use of directional and way-finding signage across all
campuses. The University has also seen a progressive roll-out of corporate
signage across all campuses since the implementation of these standards.

Quality Management
The Campus Signage Manual is a quality document and as such shall be
evaluated and updated at regular intervals. This includes formal auditing
processes for all new and existing signage on campus to ensure:
v Integrity of UniSA logo and style guide is maintained
v Compliance to legislative and corporate signage standards
v Maintenance of existing signage; and
v Implementation of new signage as required.
Signage Design
A coordinated and consistent approach in the format, construction, and use of
text, graphics, materials, and colour has been used in the design of corporate
signage documented in the Campus Signage Manual. To facilitate global
understanding, the design of campus signage draws on three different forms of
communication; written word, graphics and colour.
Consultation regarding signage also occurred with staff, students and the RSB
throughout the design phase in 2001 and again with signage consultants,
internal stakeholders and the Royal Society for the Blind as part of the review
phase in 2008/2009. There is an emphasis on ease of identification, which has
been promoted through the placement of signage, use of colour and easily
identified graphics. The use of colour also enables the grouping of particular
amenities for easy identification.
Images are also provided of other signs of interest including major signage for
new building programs that may be suitable for further use or adaption
depending on the needs of the stakeholder group.
Types of Signage
Eleven main types of signage are identified in the Campus Signage Manual:
v Campus Signature
v Campus Maps
v Directory Boards
v Building Identification
v Functional Area Identification
v Corporate Identification
v Blade Amenity Identification
v Door / Pigeon Hole Plates
v Evacuation
v Parking

Manufacturing and Installation
To assist with standardisation, cost effectiveness and quality of work, the
manufacture and installation of signage is undertaken by the Facilities
Management Unit with the use of appropriate external contractors and suppliers
nominated on the relevant Contractors Register(s).
Signage Rules
A number of rules apply to the design and implementation of corporate signage
to ensure consistency in placement, content and format of information:
Requests for new signage designs that do not form part of existing corporate
signage standards must be approved by Facilities Management Unit to ensure
design and intended use meet corporate guidelines relating to University logo,
content and placement of signage design.
Installation of all signage occurs on a rotational basis across all campuses and
it is intended that any door signage is installed within 10 working days from
placement of your initial signage request.
Approvals and timelines for all other standard corporate signage will be
negotiated with the customer, with consideration given to the urgency and type
of signage required.
7
7
Campus Signage Statement
Signage requirements that are extraordinary in nature and are not specified in
the Campus Signage Manual shall be reviewed by the Business &
Administration Coordinator, Facilities Management Unit for development and
approval to ensure consistency in signage design and placement.
All signage shall conform to the Campus Signage Manual and the University
Branding and Style Guide which shall be developed in conjunction with rules,
regulations and guidelines stipulated in appropriate legislation and standards.
