L&M 2011 Speakers
Maher Arar came to public attention after he was rendered by American authorities to
Syria, his native country. While imprisoned there he was subjected to torture and other
degrading and inhumane treatment. He was eventually released and a public inquiry
was called in Canada which cleared his name. Maher is a passionate advocate of
human rights and is a frequent speaker at national security related events. He recently
founded Prism (www.prism-magazine.com), an online not-for-profit magazine that fo-
cuses on the in-depth coverage and analysis of national security related issues.

Dina Temple-Raston is part of NPR’s National Security team, tracking terrorism at home
and abroad. A long-time foreign correspondent, she joined NPR in March 2007. She
also has reported for Bloomberg News, USA Today and CNNfn. She has two books
related to civil liberties and national security. The first, In Defense of Our America, writ-
ten with Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the ACLU, looks at civil liberties
in post-9/11 America. The other, The Jihad Next Door, is about the Lackawanna Six,
America’s first so-called “sleeper cell” and the issues that face Muslims in America post
911. Temple-Raston holds a Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a Mas-
ter’s degree from the Columbia University’s School of Journalism.
