t’s that time, when we are reminded of Past, Present, and Future. The Past is always with usbecause it is the foundation of the Present, and lives on into the Future. The Present is wherewe are now, but—more importantly—present decisions and actions determine the most impor-tant elements of the Future. And the Future is most important of all because it represents what weare working for—to make what we sum up as a “better life.”Llewellyn publishes almanacs, calendars, datebooks, and planners each year, which I also liketo think of as “yearbooks” serving their particular communities. Well, actually, each may serveseveral communities.Take the
 Moon Sign Book
, which we’ve been publishing since 1906. Its primary communities areinterested in practical “everyday” astrology—down-to-earth astrology and home gardening thatis organic, efficient, and environmentally friendly. But there’s also a major section of weatherforecasts for all fifty states; there’s a full year economic forecast; and a detailed forecast relatingthe importance of Full and New Moons throughout the year. The major function of any almanac (and the
 Moon Sign Book
is practically “archetypal” in thisrespect) is to add particular application guidance to the days of the year. The
 Moon Sign Book
provides 150 pages of Moon Sign & Phase tables and specific guidance on how to apply thisinformation to gardening, household, personal, and business success. For years I’ve practically preached that timing is the key to success. “Timing” essentially means toapply the character of the moment to turn opportunity into accomplishment. And that’s what planning is all about. When I wrote the headline for this editorial, I was addressing this key point. Our world is keyedto the calendar year that starts January 1st and ends December 31st. Every kind of performance isanalyzed by the 365 (and
) days of the astronomical year. Incomes and taxes are determined by the calendar year. The seasonal cycles relate to the school year, the agricultural and horticulturalyear, and to every kind of business activity. There’s a rhythm to life, biological and botanical, that regulates the energy and chemistry of every body and every plant, and that rhythm flows under the influence of Sun, Moon, and planets—each has its own cyclical pattern that we forecast years in advance. As “intelligent planners” we have the means of renewing—and adjusting—our many “action”programs, and we likewise have the means to begin new programs to bring change. To benefitfrom the power of intelligent planning we need various kinds of specific information reflectingour personal and communal needs and interests.Notice the two important words in the previous paragraph – intelligent and action. Unfortunately, most people do not truly plan ahead, and even more rarely do they plan intelligently. And evenmore rarely do people really plan to act with
intelligence. There’s no limit to the range of interests and the practical application of information presentedfor Past, Present and Future. We review the past to gain understanding so we can act wisely inthe present and plan for in the future. And we learn from every subject and the broad spectrumof their interaction. Llewellyn’s Calendars and Almanacs provide this ability to act with timely intelligence. All of this from a set of calendars, almanacs, and planners? Yes, because it starts with the opportunity for renewal and new beginnings calling for you to“seize the opportunity.” Only you can change, and save, the world.
