Corrosion is a major issue for the increase of service life and reliability of metallicmaterials. A detailed understanding of the mechanisms of corrosion helps us to solveexisting corrosion problems and to prevent future problems. The aim of this book is to review recent advances in the understanding of corrosion and protection mechanisms. A detailed view is provided of the chemicaland electrochemical surface reactions that govern corrosion, and of the link betweenmicroscopic forces and macroscopic behavior, is provided. In order to cover fundamental as well as practical aspects, the second edition, which has been revised and expanded (three new chapters have been added) containsin 19 chapters.Chapters 1 to13cover the basic phenomena in corrosion: adsorption, entry of hydrogen, anodic dissolution, passivation, passivity breakdown andlocalized corrosion (pitting and crevice corrosion), stress corrosion cracking, andcorrosion fatigue. Chapters 14 to19  provide the connection between the theoretical aspects of corrosion mechanisms and practical applications in industry: corrosioninhibition, atmospheric corrosion, microbially induced corrosion, corrosion innuclear systems, corrosion of microelectronic and magnetic data-storage devices, and the technologically important area of corrosion protection by surface coatings. This book is based on the results of intensive worldwide research efforts inmaterials science, surface science, and corrosion science over the past few years. Thecontributors, from leading academic and industrial research institutes, are highlyrecognized scientists in these disciplines.
