of Saint Anthony
Cathedral Basilica, the
sacred sanctuary soars
heavenward. Atop the
church sits a copper
dome and a statue of
Saint Anthony of Padua,
the patron of lost things.
The huge,
bronze doors
are imprinted with images of Jesus
Christ and adorned with bishop
staffs as door pulls. The inscription
above reads Mater Ecclesia, Mother
Church, and Porta Caeli, gates of
heaven. The cathedral is the “mother
church” to the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Beaumont where Bishop
Curtis Guillory is the chief pastor.
But whatever your faith, the cathedral
is an awe-inspiring place of worship
offering magnificent views that any
visitor can appreciate.

Walk into the main entrance to find

the granite baptismal font and pool

of the Holy Spirit – a dove and a flame – is
etched in glass above. On either side of the font
are two small rooms called confessionals, where
Catholics confess their sins to their priests. A
grand pipe organ resides in the balcony.
Look up to see intricate paintings on the
ceiling. Stunning stained-glass windows and
symbolic oil paintings adorn the walls of the
church. The stations of the cross showing Jesus’
final hours are made of porcelain.
The colonnade leading to the marble altar is
graced with mosaics representing important
traits including humility, prudence, justice,
temperance, fortitude, reverence, awe of God
and love. Large marble columns, painted arches
and heavy wooden pews line the path leading to
the altar, which is covered by a type of canopy.
Called a baldacchino, four marble columns are
topped with an ornate, gold-domed structure.
Inside the dome is a golden replica of a dove and

Tips to avoid brow blunders
text by HOLLI PETERSEN

Do yourself a favor and look in the mirror.

What do your eyes say about you? Are you tired? Hurried? Unkempt? Or in a con-
stant state of surprise?
Believe it or not, the message you’re sending starts with your eyebrows. Think of
them as the frame of your face, the icing on the cake, the “oo” in your look.
“The eyebrows are very important so it’s best to have them first shaped professional-
ly,” said Katie Craigen, a licensed esthetician and spa manager of the Getaway Day Spa at the
MCM Elegante Hotel. “Then, if you want, just maintain that shape at home with tweezing.”
Many tweezer-wielding amateurs make the mistake of overhauling their brows at
home, resulting in major brow blunders.
Waiting for that hair to re-grow can be a
tortuous process.
“You never want to do anything too
outrageous with your eyebrows,” said Todd
L. Haymon, the director of Christus Healthy
Living Spa. “Yes, you might draw some at-
tention, but it probably won’t be the positive
attention you’re looking for.”

“astronaut.” Stanton’s reply was “opera singer.” He even dressed as an opera singer
for his Halloween costume several times. So when he got his big break in classical
vocal performance, his mother simply said, “Of course.”
Stanton, a baritone vocalist and production director, is the impresario behind
the nascent Opera Beaumont. The previous incarnation, Beaumont Civic Opera,
has been defunct for about ten years, but Stanton believes that classical singing in a
staged situation would be appealing to the community. A relatively recent transplant,
Stanton has an impressive record of initiating operatic companies in various commu-
nities that continue to thrive.
“I’m one of those people who just says if you want it to happen then just do it --
make it happen!” Stanton said.
This blend of passion and confidence comes across clearly in Stanton, from his
expressive features to his warm laugh. Though pursuing a doctorate in musical arts
in vocal performance at the University of Houston and working as a grant writer for a
nonprofit organization, Stanton saw a void in the local arts options and knew he could
organize the initial steps to a renewed opera. “For better or worse, I can say that I
am always passionate about everything I do,” Stanton said. “I’ve always been the type
of person who likes to have lots of irons in the fire and things that fulfill the commu-
nity.”
Stanton grew up in the small town of Cherryville, N.C., as part of a large fam-
ily. Bit by the opera bug early, his first breakthrough opportunity came at 19, when
he auditioned for a role with Opera Carolina in Charlotte. He was “discovered,” and
soon had a New York agent and, unlike most college students, was jetting off for audi-
tions and national performances.
A turning point came when he moved to Germany to perform for an opera fes-
tival. For a season and a half, Stanton “sang his face off” and lived as a full-time,
professional singer. “I adored singing, but I’m a big family person,” Stanton said. “I
really didn’t want to be at such a high level that I’d have to be gone all the time.”
Soon Stanton was being offered teaching positions, and through coaching young
voices, found his love of directing. Though he still sings well and competitively, he
also loves his role as a facilitator for individual performers and communities.
“I have been fortunate to have a diversity of opportunities in singing, directing
and teaching,” Stanton said. “I’ve loved every step of this journey. This is my profes-
sion and my passion. Getting to this point in my career has allowed me to balance
a full life with a passion for music. This is where I landed years ago and I’m fortu-
nate to have been here ever since.”

I have always wanted to sing Enrico in “Lucia di Lammermoor” (by Donizetti). Tough call, but probably the soprano aria “Poveri Fiori, Gemme De’prati” from
