From his perfect posture or his graceful movements, your first assessment
of Charles Stanton might be dancer. However, from childhood, Stanton knew
what he would become: opera singer.
His mother tells the story that when her children were small and were asked
what they wanted to be when they grew up, her daughters said “princess” and
“astronaut.” Stanton’s reply was “opera singer.” He even dressed as an opera singer
for his Halloween costume several times. So when he got his big break in classical
vocal performance, his mother simply said, “Of course.”
Stanton, a baritone vocalist and production director, is the impresario behind
the nascent Opera Beaumont. The previous incarnation, Beaumont Civic Opera,
has been defunct for about ten years, but Stanton believes that classical singing in a
staged situation would be appealing to the community. A relatively recent transplant,
Stanton has an impressive record of initiating operatic companies in various commu-
nities that continue to thrive.
“I’m one of those people who just says if you want it to happen then just do it --
make it happen!” Stanton said.
This blend of passion and confidence comes across clearly in Stanton, from his
expressive features to his warm laugh. Though pursuing a doctorate in musical arts
in vocal performance at the University of Houston and working as a grant writer for a
nonprofit organization, Stanton saw a void in the local arts options and knew he could
organize the initial steps to a renewed opera. “For better or worse, I can say that I
am always passionate about everything I do,” Stanton said. “I’ve always been the type
of person who likes to have lots of irons in the fire and things that fulfill the commu-
nity.”
Stanton grew up in the small town of Cherryville, N.C., as part of a large fam-
ily. Bit by the opera bug early, his first breakthrough opportunity came at 19, when
he auditioned for a role with Opera Carolina in Charlotte. He was “discovered,” and
soon had a New York agent and, unlike most college students, was jetting off for audi-
tions and national performances.
A turning point came when he moved to Germany to perform for an opera fes-
tival. For a season and a half, Stanton “sang his face off” and lived as a full-time,
professional singer. “I adored singing, but I’m a big family person,” Stanton said. “I
really didn’t want to be at such a high level that I’d have to be gone all the time.”
Soon Stanton was being offered teaching positions, and through coaching young
voices, found his love of directing. Though he still sings well and competitively, he
also loves his role as a facilitator for individual performers and communities.
“I have been fortunate to have a diversity of opportunities in singing, directing
and teaching,” Stanton said. “I’ve loved every step of this journey. This is my profes-
sion and my passion. Getting to this point in my career has allowed me to balance
a full life with a passion for music. This is where I landed years ago and I’m fortu-
nate to have been here ever since.”
Bravo!
For the debut season, Stanton selected non-traditional, smaller
scale song cycles that showcase operatic voices. Admission will
be free, but donations appreciated. Scheduled events include:
