elieve it or not, the youth of our
generation crave to find an es-
cape that doesn't involve drugs
or alcohol. Unfortunately, with
amassing peer pressure and the constant cul-
ture bombardments of media and corpora-
tions, this proves very difficult to resist at
times. It can become overbearing just to find
the right friends who are involved in all the
right things.
I would like to share with you an answer,
a solution, an escape to our cold society, and
your so-called “friends”. Music.
Music is powerful. It can lift you up, or it
can wreck you. You celebrate with it, and you
join in sadness with it. It can heal and yet lead
to the utter destruction of lives. Everyone
seems to be able to find music they can relate
to, a message that seemingly corresponds
with their lives and emotions. But I'm asking
you a question, why settle just for music you
more. In consideration of the fact it is as pow-
erful as anything else in our world, it should
inspire you to live a better life and to impact
your surroundings in a positive way. We al-
ready have too much destruction, too many
cold hearts and hurt in this world; why add to
it?
I've been promoting local positive and
Christian shows in the area since October of
last year. And I must say, it's heartbreaking to
see all of the hurt in such young audiences.
It's like there's this large hole in hearts that
cannot ever be filled with things like drugs,
sex and alcohol. But there is someplace you
can go. Some place you can find like-minded
people with the same hurts and passions.
Check out a local show and celebrate life
with your friends and meet new ones. Be-
come inspired by local artists, as they carve
out this region's unique identity. Music is
about you; it is about me. Concerts are about
your life; all you have to do is dream big and
never give up. I've witnessed some amazing
things myself simply by finding and not giv-
ing up on my dreams; you can too. This I
promise, so long as you don't give up.
So with that, I dare you to find music not
just that you can relate to. Not just music that
prompts several more tears than you can han-
dle. But music that pushes you to look to the
sky. To breathe in the fresh air and close your
eyes. That, is the meaning of music. The tal-
ent is out there, and the talent is here.
Whether your taste is in acoustic and piano
sounds like UND's Emily Doll, upbeat rock
like The Valiant Nomads or intense hardcore
and punk like The Suit, your music is right
here in town. And your new friends are wait-
ing.
Downtown Grand Forks' FreedomChurch
has become a go-to destination for local cul-
ture celebrated through music. Every other

show. FreedomChurch takes on the name
“The Ember” for these events. Once a month,
I put on live rock concerts featuring some of
the region's top acts. My website,

Plastic tubes, laundry tubs, musical

instruments, and a bunch of classic songs
W
hat happens when you
combine plastic tubes,
laundry tubs, musical in-
struments, and a bunch of
classic songs?.............. Plastic Musik! And on
Wednesday, January 19, at the University of
Minnesota, Crookston, Plastic Musik will
perform in Kiehle Auditorium at 7 p.m.
Plastic Musik is an abstract percussion
show that combines innovative instrumenta-
tion with high energy, unpredictable theatrics
to bring you an enjoyable experience that you
are unlikely to forget.
By using all plastic instruments, including
a product known as “Boomwhackers,” Plas-
tic Musik is able to put an unexpected twist
on some of the most recognizable songs of
our time. Imagine a complete arrangement of
Mozart’s 40th, performed entirely with plas-
tic tubes. Or maybe Beethoven is more your
taste. Perhaps you prefer the soul of Motown,
the classics of the 80’s, hip-hop hits, or light-
ning fast rudimental drumming. Whatever
your musical taste, they’ve got it covered.
Along with the vast repertoire of recogniz-
able melodies and songs, Plastic Musik in-
corporates carefully choreographed
movement, musical improvisation, audience
participation, on-stage interaction, and per-
former personality into a show that is sure to
stimulate the senses.
Enjoy the eclectic musical style of the per-
cussion based ensemble Plastic Musik on
Wednesday, January 19, at the University of
Minnesota, Crookston. Plastic Musik will
perform in Kiehle Auditorium at 7 p.m. Ad-
mission is free for U of M, Crookston stu-
dents; $3 for non-UMC students; and $5 for
adults.
The Student Programming and Activities
for Campus Entertainment, known as
S.P.A.C.E., is bringing the group to campus
as part of its weekly series “What's on
Wednesday.”
Director of Student Activities Lisa
Samuelson is excited about hosting the group
on the Crookston campus. “Plastic Musik
was showcased at a regional conference in
April 2010 that members of the programming
board attended and the students immediately
became entranced,” she says. “S.P.A.C.E. is
so excited to be bringing this group to cam-
pus; it promises to be a great event.”

Baked Potato Soup
2 medium potatoes, baked and cooled
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) Progresso ® Chicken
Broth
2 tablespoons sour cream
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon crumbled cooked bacon or bacon
bits
1 green onion, sliced
Directions
Peel potatoes and cut into 1/2-in. cubes; place
half in a blender. Add broth; cover and process
until smooth. Pour into a saucepan. Stir in sour
cream, pepper and remaining potatoes. Cook
over low heat until heated through (do not boil).
In recent years, wedding cakes have be-
come more of an artistic centerpiece than
just a confectionary treat. Couples often
seek out renowned wedding cake bakers
for a cake that will amaze the crowd and
complete the theme of the wedding.
The average couple will spend between
$700 to $800 for their wedding cake. Al-
though many catering halls or reception
sites will include the wedding cake in a
package deal, many couples choose to
order their cake from a specialty bakery
who creates culinary masterpieces.
If television trends are any indication,
many people are opting to spend several
hundred to thousands of dollars on a cus-
tomized wedding cake. These fondant and
buttercream creations may be elaborate in
nature, so much so they'll likely need to be
ordered several months in advance.
Couples looking for something a bit dif-
ferent for their upcoming nuptials, many
want to consider these trends in wedding
of just white or ivory.
* Dramatic monograms that can add
class to the cake.
* Painted cakes with edible food color-
ing paint that feature beautiful landscapes
or a portrait. A work of art, they're both de-
licious to eat and fun to admire.
* Cakes that mirror the style of the wed-
ding gown, including fondant ruffles and
appliques.
Many couples still opt for the tradi-
tional, and that is always in style. Instead
of experimenting with the outside of the
cake, couples can be creative with cake fla-
vor and fillings. Imagine cutting open the
cake to find red velvet or a chocolate
ganache filling!

Fight Winter
Garnish with cheese, bacon and onion.
Bacon Corn Chowder
6 bacon strips, diced
3/4 cup diced celery
1 small onion, diced
1 cup diced uncooked potato
1 cup water

Chills With Chili

1 can (14-3/4 ounces) cream-style corn
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon pepper

Directions
In a saucepan, cook bacon, celery and onion
over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until
bacon is cooked; drain. Add potato and water.
Cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until potato
is tender. Stir in remaining ingredients; heat
through (do not boil). Refrigerate or freeze left-
overs.
Cheeseburger Chowder
1/2 pound ground beef
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cheddar
cheese soup, undiluted
1-3/4 cups milk
1 cup frozen shredded hash brown potatoes
1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies
1 tablespoon taco seasoning
1 tablespoon dried minced onion
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
Directions
In a large saucepan, cook beef over medium
heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the soup,
milk, potatoes, chilies, taco seasoning, onion
and chili powder until blended. Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes
or until heated through. Garnish with corn chips,
cheese and green onions if desired.

body up better than a bowl of chili.

along with Leslie Jonath co-authored "Soup's
On: Soul Satisfying Recipes from Your Fa-
vorite Cookbook Authors and Chefs,"
(Chronicle Books), knows full well the value
of a hot bowl of chili on a cold winter's day.
Frankeny's parents have enjoyed the follow-
ing recipe for "Texas Chili Soup," which
Frankeny shares in her cookbook, for years
on some of east Texas' coldest days.
Texas Chili Soup
Serves 6
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup chopped onion
4 teaspoons minced garlic
1 pound ground pork
1 pound ground beef or turkey
2 cans (29 ounces each) diced tomatoes
3 cans (15 to 16 ounces each) pinto beans,

nlike their parents, today's kids
often forgo sandlot baseball or
games of tag for much more
sedentary fare like video
games or surfing the Internet. While video
games and Internet access aren't lacking in
value, many parents would prefer their kids
be more active.
Though it can be difficult to get kids off
the couch, there are ways parents can help
their kids live and embrace a more active
lifestyle, which can have benefits both now
and down the road.
* Make it a team effort. Parents who are
concerned their kids aren't getting enough
daily exercise should ask themselves if
they're getting enough exercise themselves.
Kids aren't the only ones who need daily ex-
ercise. A good way to encourage kids is to

n March of 2003, Todd and Sonja
Burpo were living a nightmare.
Their then four-year-old son,
Colton, had suffered a burst appen-
dix and developed a life-threatening infec-
tion. Doctors told the Burpos that surgery
was Colton's only option.
Colton narrowly survived the surgery.
His survival, while miraculous, was not as
spectacular as the journey he took while
doctors worked to save his life -; while
Colton's body was in surgery, his con-
sciousness ascended to Heaven.
Months after the surgery, when the fam-
ily drove by the hospital in which he had
stayed, Colton mentioned that angels had
sung to him in Heaven. He described his

parents can take televisions out of their kids'
bedrooms, instead putting televisions only in

T
o discover the identity of any
culture, you're going to look at
the arts. They are a mirror
image, so to speak, of anyone's
identity. When you think artists, you're likely
either thinking musicians or illustrators of
some form.
I'd like to share with you a rather “quiet”
art form that literally reveals the soul as much
as anything else: ballet. This is a dance form
that originated in Renaissance Italy and has
since taken ahold all over the world, with
each region influencing the art with its own
culture and identity.
Introducing Emily Burkland, Academy
Director for the North Dakota Ballet Com-
pany here in Grand Forks. Emily is also Miss
Grand Forks, an avid volunteer committed to
making a positive difference in the commu-
nity and in local arts culture. If you're looking
for a sure positive role-model, look no fur-
ther. Below is an interview with Emily.
A5: You seem to be a very passionate and
positive person. Why are the arts so impor-
tant to you?
EB: The arts are important to me person-
ally because they have had a positive impact
on my entire life. Since I was young, I have

participated in music, dance, drama, and
more, and my experiences through these ac-
tivities have shaped me as a student and as a
community member. The benefits the arts
bring to our community are tremendous; not
only do they make a positive impact on our
state economically (in 2005, the nonprofit
arts industry's spending was over 100 million
dollars in the state of ND), but the arts also
provide a safe, subjective, and expressive
way for people of all ages to develop their
creative and critical thinking skills, leader-
ship skills, discipline and commitment, and
their voices as individuals. I can personally
attest to these traits not only in myself as a
result of my arts experiences, but also in my
dance students at the North Dakota Ballet

A5: How long have you participated in
Ballet,
EB: I actually began dance VERY late by
most traditional standards. I stepped into my
first ballet class when I was almost 14 years
old, and by the time I graduated from high
school, I had made it as a member of the
North Dakota Ballet Company. Eventually I
added training in jazz, tap, and modern, but
ballet will always be my first love!
A5: how did you land your current role
with ND Ballet Co.?
EB: I am currently the Academy Director
at the North Dakota Ballet Company & Acad-
emy, and it's a position that is new to me this
year. When I entered college, I began teach-
ing at NDBC and discovered my passion for
passing on my love of dance. I had always
been so strongly influenced by all of my
dance teachers, so it is an incredible honor for
me to play that role to my own students.
Eventually, I was promoted to other leader-
ship positions within the organization, and
this year, I have loved having the opportunity
to lead the entire Academy portion of NDBC.
Although it's a lot of work since I am also a
full-time student at UND, I love every second
of it!
A5: What is the new ballet at the end of
January about?
EB: La Fille Mal Gardee is NDBC's Jan-

uary production, and we are very excited to
produce yet another full-length story ballet
for our community. This year, the ballet is
about Lise, a village girl who is in love with
Colas. However, Lise's mother, the Widow
Simone, wants her daughter to marry the rich
yet not very smart man Alain. Through many
comical turns of events, both Alain and Colas
obtain their true loves - although exactly how
it turns out may surprise you! To find out the
ending, you'll have to come see the show!
A5: What does ballet represent to you?
EB: Ballet, to me, represents the beauty
of expression within the context of discipline,
commitment, and hard work. Perfection is
impossible to achieve in ballet, yet in every
ballet class we are constantly trying to get
better than we already are. I think it's a great
parallel for life: we all need to work hard to
be the best we can be, but we can't forget the
beauty in life along the way.
Check out the fantasic story ballet pefor-
mance, La Fille Mal Garde, which has been
hailed by the New York Times as “the most
enchanting ballet in existence.” It's formatted
as a romantic comedy and you can check it
out at The Empire Arts Center in downtown
Grand Forks January 28th to the 30th. Also

rand Forks filmmaker, Les
Sholes, has produced a Dori-
tos television commercial
that may or may not air dur-
ing the Superbowl in February. Sholes en-
tered the “Crash the Superbowl Contest”
sponsored by Frito Lay and Pepsi Cola.
The contest offers filmmakers a chance to
have their commercial aired during Super-
bowl XLV and win up to $5,000,000.
Each filmmaker was given a creative as-
signment and a choice to pick one of the
two products, Doritos or Pepsi Max, then
shoot their commercial and send it in be-
fore the November 15 deadline.
Doritos and Pepsi Max will pick five fi-
nalists from each category. From January 3
to January 30, the public will have their
chance to vote for their favorite commer-
cial. Each of the ten finalists will receive
$25,000 and will be sent to a private Super-
bowl party in Texas.
The top six commercials -- three from
each brand -- will air during Superbowl
XLV. If the commercial is awarded first
place on the USA Today Ad Meter, it will
win $1,000,000, second $600,000 and third
$400,000.
ALthough the contest received thou-
sands of submissions, Sholes figures he has
a pretty good shot at becoming a finalist.

Filmmaker tackles
Superbowl commercial

The name of his television commercial is
“Ghost Solvers”. The story line is about a
man who hears strange voices in his home
during the night and is featured on a na-
tional television series of paranormal in-
vestigators. The group investigates the
voices and arrives at an easy resolution to
the problem. However, soon after the
“Ghost Solvers” leave, the problem only
gets worse.
Sholes said he took a long time writing
the script to make certain he had all the el-
ements inside the 30 second spot. He

started with a back story, a development of
conflict, the conflict, then the resolution.
He ended up with a funny, crazy situation
with a humorous twist.
He shot the television commercial a the
Campbell House which is part of the Myra
Museum located in Grand Forks. Sholes
chose that location because it provided the
background and ambiance of the perfect
gothic style appeal.
Sholes incorporated an experienced cast
from around the region and was pleased
with their performance. Bob Seidel was

chosen as the man who receives help from
the “Ghost Solvers,” Brad Cook as the sp-
kesperson for the “Ghost Solvers,” Sean
Palmer, Lin Glimm and Blair Anderson as
the “Ghost Solvers” paranormal investiga-
tors.
Sholes was fortunate to work with a
dedicated crew from the Script Supervisor
to the Grip. He also had an actual Pranor-
mal Group on hand that assisted with the
production and provided the tools they use
in paranormal investigation such as Digital
Voice Recorder and an EMF Meter.
Sholes hired Peter Steele of HB Sound
and Light to be his cameraman because of
his insight and technique. Steele has shot
several commercials for Sholes in the past.
While most competitors in the competi-
tion are amateurs, Sholes is no stranger to
the advertising world. In 2001, he started
Fat Cat Productions. His company pro-
duces pre-made professional quality televi-
sion commercials that can be used for any
business in different syndicated areas
around the country. Sholes also produces
short and feature films for which he has
won several international awards.
