Proposed Timetable:
Timetable: 2 evenings per week. Extra workshops are
scheduled throughout the courses; these workshops may be
offered during the evening or on Saturday.

You will receive your class timetable at the time of enrolment. However, timetables
are subject to change.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
DESCRIPTION: This nationally recognised course trains you to become an
interpreter, with National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters
(N AATI) accr editation at paraprofessional level.

LANGUAGES OFFERED will be determined by customer demand and resources.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
OPPORTUNITIES: Paraprofessional interpreters can work in Government
Departments such as DIAC (Immigration and Citizenship), Health and Social
Security.

MI NIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Year 12 or equivalent.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
CRITERIA: Preference will be given to applicants who are either:
1. currently employed as paraprofe ssional interpreters and accreditation at the
pa raprofessional level is a requirement of employment
2. seeking employment as paraprofessional interpreters
3. seeking employment as bilingual information officers or where bilingual skills are
required

NB: Applicants will be selected on merit based on an interview to assess oral and
written skills in English and LOTE.

SELECTION METHOD: Registration and Selection process involves completing an
Expression of Interest form, attending an Information session and completing an
entry test.

1. You must contact Customer Service at Petersham College, West Street, on


9335-2700 to obtain an expression of interest form (EOI)and receive an
Information Package.

2. You must come to an Information Session and bring the completed expression of
interest (EOI) with you. The information session will take a minimum of two hours,
so please be on time. Details of this session advised in information package

3. At the info rmation session, you will be required to book a time for your entry
test.

Testing will be in English and LOTE (Language Other Than English) and will cover
listening, speaking, reading and writing (for interpreting courses) and reading and
writing (for translating courses); for that reason, at this stage, we cannot tell you
which night your test will be on, so please make sure that you are available during
the evenings of the testing week because different languages will be tested on
different nights.

No dictionaries will be allowed during the entry testing.

4. Please bring copies of all supporting documentation to this Information Session


to attach to your EOI. If you cannot come to this Information Session, please send
a representative or re-apply for the following semester. EOIs lodged after this date
will be considered for subsequent semesters.

Courses and languages to be offered in each semester are not decided until after
the Information Session and the Entry Test. Please note that courses offered are
ba sed on demand and funding.

COST: In 2010 the TAFE NSW fee for this course is $621.00 per semester.

$185 per Year course related charge at Petersham part time

Payment Notes:
1) The TAFE NSW fee is payable for each year of enrolment. A TAFE year consists
of two semesters of 18 weeks. The minimum TAFE NSW Fee for a course is based
on one semester, even if the course duration is less than 18 weeks. If the course
runs from 18 weeks to a year, it counts as two semesters and you may pay the
TAFE NSW Fee in two half-yearly payments. If you choose to pay the TAFE NSW
fee in two instalments, the first ins talment must be paid at enrolment and the
second must be paid by 31 May. Note:If you commence a course in semester 2 and
your course duration is more than 18 weeks you will be required to pay the relevant
TAFE NSW fee for 1 semester. A Fee Notification will be sent to you. You may pay
the TAFE NSW fee by EFTPOS, Visa card, Mastercard, cheque or money order. NO
CASH is accepted.

2) If you receive a government benefit such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, or


Sickness Allowance and provide proof at enrolment, you may be eligible for a TAFE
NSW concession of $51 per course enrolment per year. Students in receipt of a
Disability Support Pension and students with a disability who are Clients of a

teacher Consultant are entitled to one full fee exemption for one TAFE NSW course
per year and are eligible for the $51 Concession fee for subsequent enrolments in
that year.

Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students are exempt from paying the TAFE
NSW Fee.

3) In addition to the TAFE NSW fee, some programs have Course Related Charges
associated with them. Course Related Charges cover the cost of materials,
resources, equipment and services used in your program. If your circumstances do
not enable you to pay this charge you will need to speak with your teacher when
you commence class to negotiate alternative arrangements.

RECOGNITION:
RECOGNITION: TAFE NSW recognises skills and knowledge gained through
previous studies, the workplace an d life experience which may allow you to
complete your qualification faster. You may be entitled to recognition that wi ll
exempt you from one or more modules, up to 100% of the requirements for a
course award. There is no fee for processing recognition applications for current
TAFE NSW students. Commercial (fee based) recognition is also available to
organisations and individuals.
