Honorable William Reilich, Chair
Monroe County Republican Committee
460 State Street, Suite 100-B
Rochester, NY 14608
Dear Chairman Reils
This past summer, as candidates for the New York State Assembly, each of us signed a
pledge in support of independent nonpartisan redistricting. I’m sure you are as gratified as | am
to see a majority of our colleagues in the state legislature commit to reforming the current
redistricting process. We must eliminate the gerrymandering of districts that puts political
interests before the public interest.
In the spirit of true reform I hope you will join me in pledging an independent
nonpartisan redistricting process for the Monroe County Legislature. There cannot be two
separate standards for redistricting — a nonpartisan approach at the state and federal levels; and a
partisan approach at the local level. Any suggestion that the local process is less susceptible to
politicization would seriously erode the credibility of those pledging reform efforts. Iam sure
you would agree that one cannot simply be in favor of reform only when it benefits them
politically.
Let us put our political differences aside and stand together, as we did just a few months
ago at City Hall, to chart a new course for our community. I ask you to join me in publicly
supporting independent, nonpartisan redistricting for the Monroe County Legislature in 2011.
