Concert Posters - BGP - Bill GrahamPresents
by Michael ErlewineMichael@Erlewine.netThe Bill Graham Presents series startedin 1985 and is still running today. Itboasts over 325 posters. It differs fromthe BGF series (which is held at theFillmore West) in that all of these eventsare held anywhere but at the Fillmorevenue. Usually, these are large-scaleevents, requiring a stadium or coliseum, for groups like the Rolling Stones and soforth. And, unlike the New FillmoreSeries, which hold events every week, the Bill Graham Presents BGP series isperiodic, as needed, andcorrespondingly there are fewer of them. Some of these posters are oversize, very rare, and thus hard to find. Manyare oversize. The list of artists reads likea directory of modern poster artists andincludes:
Aerosmith by Randy Chavez
David Singer, Amacker Bullwinkle, ChrisShaw, Christopher Peterson, ChuckSperry, Craig Howell, Dave Huckins,Frank Wiedemann, Harry Rossit, JimPhillips, Jonathan Hess, Lisa Eng,Randy Chavez, Randy Tuten, Rex Ray,Su Suttle (aka Susan Tagg), WinstonSmith, and many others.
David Gray by Christopher Peterson
The BGP posters series differs from itssister venue, the BGF (New Fillmore)Series in that most of the BGP posterswere for special events, big acts like theRolling Stones, the Allman Brothers,Spinal Tap, acts probably too large tobook into the Fillmore Auditorium, wherethe BGF dances were held. Although Ihave not data, my guess is that morethought (and perhaps money) was putinto the hands of the artists doing thework for this series. And a BGP poster isconsidered more prestigious than amore local venue.
