Classic Posters Interview withAndrew Todd by Michael Erlewine
Michael Erlewine: When and how didyou get interested in art?Andrew Todd: I was interested in art at avery early age. In fact, I used to get introuble for doodling and drawing inclass, when I was supposed to beingdoing work. Mainstream-offset-bandposters always bored me, but when Iwas introduced to handmade, hand-printed gig posters and promotionalposters, I was quite intrigued.Michael Erlewine: What kind of artinfluenced you?Andrew Todd: My influences are broad. My biggest influences are AlphonseMucha, Rick Griffin, Ralph Steadman,Bernard Tschumi, Roy Lichtenstien, JayRyan / The Bird Machine and StevenCerio. While I'm influenced by theseamazing artists, I try to stay away frommaking art that resembles their work. Itry to make each piece an Andrew Toddpiece, and be able to be recognized asthat.Michael Erlewine: What concert-postersartists influenced you?Andrew Todd: My biggest influences arethe old Fillmore artists, including, RickGriffin, Wes Wilson, David Singer,Stanley Mouse, and Victor Moscoso.I've always loved psychedelic artwork, but also love strong design, like that ofmore contemporary poster artists likeJay Ryan, Dan Grzeca, Steven Cerio, and Aesthetic Apparatus - Dan Ibarra,Michael Byzewski.Michael Erlewine: What was your firstconcert-music poster?Andrew Todd: My first concert posterwas for Tom's Kitchen Band, august27th, 2001, at the Docksider in Erie, PA.I was commissioned to do the poster byTom's Kitchen Band bassist, MarkMang. I printed an edition of 45 three-screen prints. The registration was amess; the colors didn't turn out how Iwanted them to, but it got me another job doing another poster for them amonth later.Michael Erlewine: What are the mainvenues you have done posters for?Andrew Todd: I have done a bunch ofposters for the Docksider in Erie, PA.They have never commissioned me todo anything. It's always been the bands.I've done a few for other Erie, PA-areavenues, none of which have ever paidme fairly or promptly.Michael Erlewine: What are the mainbands you have done posters for?Andrew Todd: My favorite band I'vedone a poster for is BORIS. They are aJapanese three-piece, who are one ofthe heaviest bands on the planet. I hadheard very little of them, before doingthe poster, and then I heard more andhad to get EVERYTHING they'd everdone. They're incredibly heavy andexperimental and I urge everyone tolisten to them. The bands I've doneseveral posters for are Tom's KitchenBand, Frog Tree Gorge Band and myown band, Nemo.Michael Erlewine: Please describe themedia and size/formats you have mostusedAndrew Todd: I mostly do screen prints, all done by hand. The smallest I've doneis 18x12-1/2 and the largest is 40x14.My favorite size is 20x28. It's nice andbig, gives me lots of room to work with, and makes registration pretty easy.
