SINGLE AND MULTIMODE
FIBER (SMF AND MMF)
 Link between CO and BS is the optical fiber.

 Optical fibers are classified into two –Single and

Multimode fiber.

 MMF is efficient, as it has high numerical aperture that

means larger acceptance angle that allows more optical
power to be coupled into a fiber

 Due to low bandwidth and high core diameter MMF is

better over SMF
APPLICATIONS OF RADIO OVER FIBER

 Access to dead zones

 FTTA(fiber to the antenna)

 3G and 4Gmobiles

ADVANTAGES OF RADIO-OVER-
FIBER
 Low attenuation

 Lower cost

 Future proof

 Low complexity
LIMITING FACTORS
 Dynamic range is the most important parameter for
mobile communications such as GSM.

 Dispersion which leads to inter symbol interference.

 Three types-intermodal, chromatic and waveguide.

 Crosstalk and non-linear effects.

FIBER OR RADIO? YES!

 In many cases radio is by far the faster and cheaper way

to provide the last mile of Internet access and that only
radio supports roaming while only fiber (of today’s
alternatives) is appropriate for high capacity backbone.
CONCLUSION

 ROF technology is an essential technology, provides

huge bandwidth, mobility and feasibility.

 The limiting factors of optical fibers have a great impact

on the optical links which may limit the Bit speed and
transmission rate in ROF systems.
