Classic Posters Interview with Headsof State by Michael Erlewine
Michael Erlewine: When and how didyou get interested in art?Heads of State: We have always beenartistic young lads. We met in collegeand upon graduation found ourselves in jobs that really didn't push our creativityas much as we had hoped that theywould. So we found poster art really asan outlet for artistic sides.Michael Erlewine: What kind of artinfluenced you?Heads of State: We are heavilyinfluenced by graphic design. Peoplelike Saul Bass, Luba Lukova, AlexeyBrodovitch, Milton Glaser, StefanSagmeister. These people reallyinfluenced our style as poster artists, even though their disciplines are fardifferent from poster making. Beyondthat, I think we are influenced byeverything around us, albums from ouryouth, type treatments of early and mid20th century paper backs, old signage, you name it.Michael Erlewine: What concert-postersartists influenced you?Heads of State: We are really in an oddspot. Some of our major influences areour contemporaries today. We areyoung, only 24, so we grew up flippingthrough Juxtapoz looking at the work ofFrank Kozik and Derek Hess. We werein high school looking at the flyers thatArt Chantry put out. In college, we sawand were heavily influenced by the workof Jeff Kleinsmith. So its strange being alittle younger. We initially weren't reallyinfluenced by the posters from the1960s and 1970s. Certainly now wehave a great appreciation for them, butgrowing up, it was something thatrelated to our parents generation, andwhen your 14 or, 15 its law to hate thatstuff.Michael Erlewine: What was your firstconcert-music poster?Heads of State: Our first poster was forDillinger Escape Plan with Dalek at theFirst Unitarian Church in Philadelphia.Michael Erlewine: What are the mainvenues you have done posters for?The First Unitarian Church, TheTrocadero, North Star Bar.Michael Erlewine: What are the mainbands you have done posters for?Heads of State: Dillinger Escape Plan,Idlewild, Pinback, Ted Leo, J Mascis,Engine Down, And You Will Know Us Bythe Trail of Dead.Michael Erlewine: What media do youuse?Heads of State: Most of our posters arehand screen printed 2-4 colors. Oursizes vary 18x24, 17x23, or 13x19, butreally the design dictates the size, so ifan odd size works better, we will go withthat.Michael Erlewine: What other posterartists have you collaborated with?Heads of State: Unfortunately, as of nowwe have not collaborated with anyone, though we are working to do a splitposter with Serigraphie Populaire.Michael Erlewine: Who are your favoritecurrent poster artists?Heads of State: Jeff Kleinsmith, PatentPending, Bird Machine, NocturnalShowprint, Serigraphie Populaire,Aesthetic Apparatus - Dan Ibarra,Michael Byzewski, Programmable
