Michael@Erlewine.netMichael Erlewine: When and how didyou get interested in art?Mark Dancey: I have been interested inpictures for as long as I have been ableto see. I became interested in posterswhen I became interested in punk rock.Initially, I made my own posters onposter board by enlarging and paintingthe cover art from my Elvis Costello andClash cassettes.Michael Erlewine: What kind of artinfluenced you?Mark Dancey: I learned from copyingMarvel Comics and Mad Magazine andlater I liked Zap comics and Mayan artand Russian constructivist art and M.C.Escher and Ralph Steadman'sillustrations.Michael Erlewine: What concert-postersartists influenced youMark Dancey: I liked BxW Xeroxedflyers for hardcore shows and my roomwas papered with them. The designerswere always anonymous. Later I likedMucha and Will Bradley and JosefSattler.Michael Erlewine: What was your firstconcert-music poster?Mark Dancey: The first flyer was noteven for a gig but simply had our band'sname Born Without a Face on it. Thatwas in 1983. We were so excited aboutthe whole thing that we went aroundtown putting up flyers, just to be doing it!Michael Erlewine: What are the mainvenues you have done posters for?Mark Dancey: I have done many postersfor St. Andrew's Hall, which is in myhome town of Detroit.Michael Erlewine: What are the mainbands you have done posters for?Mark Dancey: When I was in a band, Idid many posters for my own band. NowI actually prefer to do posters foranything other than rock concerts. Forexample, I enjoyed doing a poster for aboxing match between Angel Manfreedyand Jorge Paez, and would like to domore projects like that.Michael Erlewine: Please describe themedia and size/formats you have mostused?Mark Dancey: I usually silk screen theposters in 18"x24" format. When I firststarted making posters. I was using alocal printer, until I discovered he wasrunning off many more copies forhimself and selling them. After that, Ihave been working with a friend andprinting everything myself.Michael Erlewine: What other posterartists have you collaborated with?Mark Dancey: noneMichael Erlewine: Who are your favoritecurrent poster artists?Mark Dancey: I don't have any favoritesMichael Erlewine: What are your favoritebands?Mark Dancey: I do not like very manybands. I think the bands are often theweakest part of the posters.
