Unflown: I've been drawn to visual artsall my life; however, growing up in arather rural community, I had no conceptthat it was practical to make a living atart. I studied photography at acommunity college. where I discovered"graphic design." With my AssociatesDegree in Photography, I went on touniversity to study design and unravelmy heart. In Bellingham, WA, I began shootingbands, starting up a semi-legitimatemusic-monthly with some fellas, whilegoing to school and working at aphotomat that was known by its giantplaster frog on the roof. The bands gaveme a whole new perspective on whatyou could do with your drive to create.Bellingham breeds amazing folks, a lotof talent. I made my first flyer for one ofthe bands in town, Federation X,through their encouragement, andburned it (for effect) on their communalstovetop.Art Chantry does his legendary work forEstrus, located there in Bellingham, andhe saw the concert photography I waspublishing in our cruddy newsprintmagazine. I began working with Estrusafter I got a postcard from them saying Ihad a good eye. Needless to say, ArtChantry has always been one of mybiggest influences for his dedication tolow-budget, powerful visual design.Unfortunately, I had very little exposureto poster art in Wenatchee, beyond yourearly-computer desktop-publishing.There weren't many bands in town andposters were rare. Around 1990, trips toSeattle did introduce me to some flyersthat I stole away to my bedroom, butmost of the work at the time was puretypographic crap.Michael Erlewine: What kind of artinfluenced you?Unflown: Everything.Michael Erlewine: What was your firstconcert-music poster?Unflown: Federation X and the Narrowsat the 3B Tavern in Bellingham, 2000.Michael Erlewine: Please describe themedia and size/formats you have mostused?:11x17 photocopy. Am doing somesilkscreen, as it comes up.Unflown: Michael Erlewine: Who areyour favorite current poster artists?Unflown: Seriously, I'm just impressedwith the caliber that the genre has beenseeing lately.Michael Erlewine: What are your favoritebands?Unflown: the Lapse, Bob Dylan, theEels, Cinerama, Shellac, Pacer, WhiteStripes, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits...Michael Erlewine: Any poster shows ofyour work?Unflown: October 2002, Portland,Oregon. "Paper, Scissors, Rock!: 25Years of Northwest Punk PosterDesign." at the Pacific NorthwestCollege of Art. December 2002,Philadelphia, Penn. "Artifacts of theImprobable" at the Trocadero.
