• Resident of Reading, Massachusetts • Served with the 13th Massachusetts Regiment in the American Civil War • The Reading Antiquarian Society has over 60 of his letters, mostly addressed to his brother; three are provided here • He participated in battles of South Mountain, Antietam, and the First Battle of Petersburg (among others) • After the war he was employed until six weeks before his death at Samuel Pierce’s Organ Pipe Factory (in Reading, MA) • He was married in 1876 to Rachel Knights and had one child, a daughter named Myra • He represented Reading in the state legislature in 1882 and served for a number of years as chief engineer of the fire department Information courtesy of Gary d’Entremont and Reading Antiquarian Society
