The McGill and Nairobi programmes and the CHAMP programme in Uganda werelater to influence the development of the CIDA funded Primary Health Care EastAfrica (PHCEA) project in the late 1980s which was negotiated and championed bythe Hillmans. The PHCEA project focused on improving the teaching of Paediatricsand Child Health in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia, including the exchangeof students and staff. This project produced a popular teaching manual - The PrimaryHealth Care manual for medical students and other health workers - which is still inuse today in at least five medical schools and is stocked in several libraries.The Hillmans have also supported the development of new medical schools at MoiUniversity (in Eldoret, Kenya), at Mbarara University for Science and Technology(Uganda), and at Gulu University (Uganda). Following their retirement in Canada,they continued their active involvement abroad in international health by serving asconsultants or visiting professors. They undertook and completed assignments forCanadian External Services Organization (CESO) in Kenya, India, Guyana,Philippines and Pakistan. At the time of Don's death, the Hillmans were working on aproject funded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada inZambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.In recognition of this lifetime commitment and tremendous contribution to GlobalHealth spanning over thirty-five years, the Hillmans received several awards. Thisincludes the Ross Award (1989), the prestigious Orders of Canada (1994), theJames H. Graham award (1995) the Lifetime Achievement Award of the CanadianSociety for International Health, recognition by the American Academy of Paediatrics,and honorary doctor of laws degrees.As we celebrate the life of Don Hillman, we thank him and his wife Liz for thetremendous contribution and lifetime commitment to international health, which willremain an inspiration for many years to come, to all of us including many generationsof medical students and paediatricians all over the world.
