INTRODUCTIONAsaresultoftheApollo14mission,approximately42,285gramsoflunarmaterialwerereturned.Thesamplesincludeparticlesrangingfromdust-sizeto"BigBertha"(sample14321),withamassofalmost9000grams.ThisbookletincludespetrographicdescriptionsofallApollo14sampleslargerthan1cminanydimension.Ithasbeenpreparedasanintermediatestep
inthecompilationofanewApollo14samplecatalog.Theformatisdifferentfromthatincatalogspreviouslypreparedbythecuratorialstaffbecausemanyofthesamplesinthiscollectionhavebeen
extensivelyinvestigated.Consequently,rockdescriptionswerecompiledfrommanysources.Firstofall,welookedattheoriginalnotestakenbymembersofthepreliminaryinvestigationteam(PET).Naturally,thesedescriptionswerefoundtobewidelyvariable,bothindetailandinuseofte

minology.Wehaveattemptedtoimpartuniformitywhereverpossible;however,wordsusedbydifferentmembersofPETsuchaslightandda
r
k,coarse-,medium-,andfine-grained,etc.,maynotbeusedasconsistentlyaswewouldhaveliked.Inaddition,wehaveattemptedtosummarizethepetrographicliterature,andagain,wearefacedwithnon-uniformtermi-nology.Adiscussionofgeneralnomenclatureasappliedtolunarbrecciasbyvariousinvestigatorshasbeenincluded.Althoughwehaveadheredtocommonlyacceptedusagesofgeologicterms,wehaveincludedalistofpetrographictermsfrequentlyusedinrockdescriptionsforconvenience.Whenpossible,weexaminedatleastonerepresentativethinsectionforeachgeneric.Eachsectionwedescribedwasphotographed(llOx)intrans-mittedlightandisincludedherein.Atleastonephotographofeachsamplewasselectedfromamongthoseonfiletoprovidearepresentativepictureofthehandspecimen.Thesampledescriptionforma

wefollowinthisbookletconsistsoffiveparts:I)Anintroductorysectionwhichincludesinformationonlunarsamplelocation,orientation,andreturncontainerstakenfromthepaperbySwannetal.(1977);2)Asectiononphysicalcharacteristics,whichcontainsthesamplemass,dimensions,andabriefdescription;3)Surfacefeatures,includingzappits,cavities,andfracturesasseeninbinocularview;4)Petrographicdescription,consistingofabinoculardescriptionand,ifpossible,athinsectiondescription(Unlessotherwisenoted,thedescriptionisofthebinocularview.);5)Adiscussionofliteratu

erelevanttosamplepetrologyisin-cludedforsampleswhichhavepreviouslybeenexaminedbythescientificcommunity.
 
Becausethebookletwaspreparedinthisfashion,somesampleswillbeseentohavereceivedmoreattentionthanothers.Alongthesesamelines,modelsandgeneologieshavebeenmadeforafewsamplesandhavebeenin-cludedhereinaccordingtotheiravailability.Wewelcomeanyconstructivecommentsontheseefforts,andtheywillbeconsideredinthepreparationoftheforthcomingApollo14samplecatalog.Havingcompiledthisbooklet,wewishtoemphasizethatthereisnosub-stitutetoactuallylookingattherock,andaskthatinvestigatorsre-portallneworconflictinginformationonthese(oranyother)samplestothecurator'sofficeforincorporationindatapackskeptoneachgeneric.ii
