Defining “Philanthropy”:
• The effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or
donations.
• Love of humankind in general.
• Something, such as an activity or institution, intended to promote human welfare.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the
philanthropists to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice that make philanthropy necessary."
Traditional philanthropy dominates the nonprofit sector (namely, people giving to support or
compensate those who are in need, etc.) In this session, we will explore: what some local
organizations are doing to support this growing area of philanthropy that challenges the status quo,
focuses on changing the systems and structures that cause disenfranchisement and the impact it this
type of philanthropy is having in community outcomes.
