GPS DESIGN FOR NETWORK TRAVEL TIME STUDY
ABSTRACT
Memory decay, failure to understand or to follow surveyinstructions, unwillingness to report full details of travel, and simple carelessness have allcontributed to the incomplete collection of travel data in self-reporting surveys.

Travel time-based measure, such as mean travel time, is easy tounderstand by both the professional transportation community and the traveling public. Traveltime-based measure is also applicable across modes and is a common measure of effectivenessfor all modes. These advantages make travel time-based measure extremely powerful, versatile, and desirable. The main objective is to investigate the statistical properties of link travel time and the transform of the properties over the change of the traffic conditions andto propose an efficient link travel time estimation method by small number of travel timereports from the GPS technology. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has beenused as a supplement in the collection of personal travel data. Previous studies confirmed thefeasibility o f applying GPS technology to improve both the accuracy and completeness of travel data.2
