Cast-on
Chart (main body of sleeve)
Begin chart. You will be repeating each row of the chart twice, once for the front of the sleeve, and oncefor the back. Once you have knitted the entire chart, please follow the directions below for the topportion of the sleeve. Mind your floats at the ends and beginning of the sides of your work to be surethey are long and loose enough to leave room for your Kindle to slip inside and not be blocked.
Top of sleeve
After you complete the chart, drop the CC yarn (do not break) and knit one round in MC.Next round: K2tog, K 29, K2tog, K 29 (2 total sts decreased, you should have 30 sts per needle).Round 3: Begin the striped portion of top of the sleeve - * K1 CC (blk), K1 MC (white)* to end of round.Repeat for 9 rounds more (10 rnds total striped).
Flap
Next, begin flap by slipping 30 sts from front of sleeve onto your smaller needle and reserve for later.Knit 30 back sts in striped pattern for 15 rows total. The flap portion will be knit back and forth flat tocreate the flap to be seamed down later.Drop your CC yarn (right side of flap is facing you) and purl to end of row with MC. Flip and purl to end of next row in MC as well. BO the flap in purl sts, leaving an 18" tail of MC (do not weave in). Snip CC of tailon opposite side of flap leaving an 18" tail as well (do not weave in). Tails will be used later for seamingthe flap closed on sides.
Lining
Now the lining will be knit using those 30 sts that were reserved on your smaller needle earlier. Join theCC yarn and *P4, K2tog* to end of row (5 sts total decreased for front side of lining, 25 sts left onneedle).Pick up sts along the same row across the back using purls to pick up. You will be picking up 25 sts tomatch the front of lining. Do this by *P4, skip 1 st* to end of row (now you will have 50 sts totalbetween both needles, 25 front, 25 back). This round is done in purl sts to create a "fold" so the lininglays flatter.Begin knitting in stockinette stitch for approximately 6.5" or just about or under the length of your outersleeve. Graft (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer04/FEATtheresasum04.html)the lining closed,
weave in your end, and tuck the lining smooth inside of sleeve.
Finishing
I used a crochet hook to quickly and neatly seam the flap edges to the sides of sleeve. This way youwon't need any buttons or ties and it's quick and easy to get the Kindle inside and back out.
