SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 23BY SENATOR MORRISHA RESOLUTIONTo designate May 13, 2009, as "Louisiana Chemical Industry Day."WHEREAS, nature endowed Louisiana with gifts that provide the springboard formajor industry and brings great benefit to Louisiana citizens; andWHEREAS, these gifts include oil and natural gas, salt dome caverns, sulfurdeposits, fresh water, and access to the oceans of the world through the Calcasieu Basin andthe Mississippi River; andWHEREAS, the chemical industry has grown around the state's natural amenities tobecome one of Louisiana's greatest assets; andWHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry depends on Louisiana and its residentsfor its resources, a well-trained workforce and a strong business climate; andWHEREAS, this industry provides direct jobs for more than twenty-three thousandLouisianians and tens of thousands more in hundreds of businesses that support the chemicalindustry; andWHEREAS, for every job created by the Louisiana chemical industry, another sixpoint two jobs are created in the state; andWHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry annually produces nearly fifty billiondollars in products, almost ten percent which is exported to the world through Louisianaports; andWHEREAS, Louisiana is the nation's third largest chemical producer, the largestproducer of agricultural chemicals and the second largest producer of organic and inorganicchemicals; andWHEREAS, the Louisiana chemical industry produces nearly forty percent of thevalue added in Louisiana manufacturing; andWHEREAS, the chemical industry contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to stateand local coffers through direct tax payments and through household earnings; andWHEREAS, products from the chemical industry enhance the lives of Louisianaresidents, ranging from fire resistant foam used in bedding and chairs, to nitrogen used in
