The measure would alsorequest the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, uponreceiving donations from nonstate sources covering those costs,to erect those signs.WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Joel B. ce was killed on February 25, 2010, whilein performance of his duties to the citizens he was sworn to protect;andWHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier was born inBakers

eld and raised in Fresno, attending local schools andReedley College. Upon joining the Fresno County Sheriff 
s Of 
f
cein 1998, Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier worked in the Patrol Divisionand as a detective assigned to the Robbery/Property Crimes andHomicide units. He was also a longtime member of the Sheriff 
sSearch & Rescue Team. Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier was adedicated of 
f
cer who served his community and loved hisprofession; andWHEREAS, On February 25, 2010, Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier was investigating a felony assault case in the townof Minkler, California, in eastern Fresno County. While DeputySheriff Wahlenmaier was serving a search warrant, the suspectambushed law enforcement of 
f
cers with gun
f
re. Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier suffered gunshot wounds that resulted in his deathupon his arrival at Community Regional Medical Center. Thesubsequent investigation found that the suspect, a 51-year-oldMinkler man, was angry with other residents of the town and had

planned to ambush law enforcement of

cers if they attempted tocontact him. The suspect committed suicide during the incident.Reedley Police Of 
f
cer Javier Bejar was also killed in the gunbattle; andWHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier is survived by hisloving wife Beverly, and his two children, daughter Amy and sonAustin. He is also survived by his parents, Arthur and PatriciaWahlenmaier, his sister Natalie (Wahlenmaier) Tomajan, andbrother Tyler Wahlenmaier; andWHEREAS, It is appropriate to memorialize Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier

Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senatethereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby recognizes thesacri
f
ce made by Deputy Sheriff Wahlenmaier to protect thepeople of California and designates the portion of State HighwayRoute 168 from the intersection of Dragon
y Lane and TollhouseRoad to Ockenden Ranch Road in Fresno County as the DeputySheriff Joel B. Wahlenmaier Memorial Highway; and be it further
Resolved,
That the Department of Transportation is requestedto determine the cost of erecting the appropriate signs, consistentwith the signing requirements for the state highway system,showing this special designation and, upon receiving donationsfrom nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs; andbe it further
Resolved,
That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copiesof this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to theauthor for appropriate distribution.
