Themostbeautifulthingwecanexperienceisthemysterious.
Itisthesourceofalltrueartandscience.

Inthebeginningwehaveheardthisstorymanytimes,whetheritbefromscienceor
religion.Onepointthatwecanagreeonisthatlifeiseternal.Fromascientificperspective,
energyandmatterhasbeenaroundforeveranditwillcontinuetobethatway,asboth
energyandmattercanneitherbecreatedordestroyed.Fromareligiousperspective,even
inmostpolytheisticfaiths,thereisacauselessandeternalprimordialforcethat
supersedesallothers.
Bothscienceandreligioncanpointtoanindescribableentitythatwaspresent
beforetheexistenceweknowof.Inscience,weusedtocallitthesingularity,where
timespaceisbrokendownduetobeingatPlancklengthormaybesmaller,whichlendsto
thelawsofphysicsasweknowittobeeitherobsoleteorunobservableatthisscale.
Thoughtheconceptofexistenceexpandingonlyfromthesingularityisnowseenas
outdatedthroughourunderstandingofinflation,westillthinkthatbeforetheUniversewe
knowof(withitsparticularlaws),theUniversewasexpandingfrominfinitesimalstates
whendensitywassocondensedthatwecannotunderstanditbyourlawsofphysics.In
religion,wecallitbymanynames:Allah,Yahweh,Parabrahma,GodAlmightyandmany

morethatrefertoapresencebeforetheUniversewascreated.
BothscienceandreligioncommonlypositthattheUniverseasweexperienceitwas
nottrulycreated,butratherexpandedfromaninitialsourcethathasalways
existeddespitecreationstoriesfromreligionandtheconfusionofwhatactuallyhappened
duringtheBigBang.TheBigBangisnowseenasanincreaseinentropyfromexistence
(whichisinfacteternal)atthescaleofPlanck,notasanexplosionofchaoticproportions.
Primarily,religionsdemonstratethatlifestemsfromGod,andthereforenothingisinreality
created,butonlytransformedfromthematterandenergyofGod.
Whetheroneholdsfasttoreligionorscience(orboth),wecanagreethatthereisa
sourcetoourUniversethatwasnevercreatedandwillneverbedestroyed.

Thesource,knowneitherbyscienceorreligion,cannotbeunderstoodbyourlimited
intellect.Notonlyisitbeyondourlawsofphysics,itisalsobeyondourimagination.Canwe
fathomsomethingthatdoesnotabidebywhatweknowofaslivingornonliving?Like
virtualparticles,thatpopinandoutofexistence,thesourcecannotbesaidtobelivingor
dead.Thesourcedefiesalldefinitions,asitisabsolutepossibility.Whateveryousayabout
itisbothcorrectandincorrect:acompleteparadox.
Thoughtocallitacompleteparadoxandholditatthatisbothcorrectandincorrect.
Azenmasteroncesaid,whichinitselfisabithypocritical,Byspeaking,youalreadymake
amistake.Justbysayingsomething,wehavecommittedanerror,becausethetruth
cannotbeexpressedinwords.Nomatterhowmuchwewriteortalkaboutanysubject,its
fulltruthcannotberevealedwhichisasignthateverythinginexistenceandnonexistence
isthesource.
Theonlywaywecanknowthesourceisbyexperiencingit.Toreligiouspeople,this
mightsoundfamiliar,buttothescientificcommunity,itmayseemfarfetched.Eitherway,
knowthatexperiencingthesourceisnotsomemystictripsomeonehasitisactuallyquite
anormalhappening.Knowingthesourcebydirectexperienceislikegettingatasteofwhat
itisliketobethesource,atleastatfirst.

Tobecomelikethesource,wehavetogobeyondourthoughts.Remember,the
sourcecannotbeunderstoodintellectually.Bysurpassingourthoughts,weenterastateof
awarenessthatsomecallmentalsilence.Thestateofmentalsilenceisreflectingtheway
oflifeofthesource,assilencecancontainallpossibilitieswithinit.Itistheblanksheet
thatallcompositionsarewrittenon:theblanksheetisnotnothing,butratherapresence
thatisnotdefined.
Whythewordbecomewasinquotationmarksinthelastparagraphwasthatina
sense,thereisnothingbutthesource.Ifitcontainsabsolutelyallpossibilities,howcan
therebeanythingelse?Andinfact,asshownbystringtheory,therecanbeothersources
thathaveabsolutepossibility,butthenagain,allthosesourcesshareasource:the
absolutepossibilitiescontainedwithinallthesourcesofabsolutepossibilities.
Yetsomeonecanask:ifthereisnothingbutthesource,thenwhydontwealready
actlikethesourceandhavetolearnhowtoexperienceit?Theanswer:wealreadyactlike
thesourceandwearethesource,butwedontknowitfully.
Ifwekeepinmindthatthesourceisabsolutepossibility,understandingitismuch
easier.Wearejustpossibilitiesthathaveforgottenourabsolutepossibility.

withourselves.Sincethisisthecase,wewilluseofourownselvestoenactthis
experience.
Ifwearethesource,wehavetheentiretyofexistencewithinus.Understandingthis
asaphysicalexperienceisrealizingthisfact,sowecannamethisexperienceas
selfrealization.
Tounderstandyourself,youcanuseselfinquiryandaffirmations.Usingyourown
bodyasameansofcomprehension,youcanemploynerveclustersalongyourspinewhile
youperformaprocessofselfinquiryandsayaffirmations.Theseaffirmationscanbesaid
silentlywithintohaveagreatereffect.
Youcansitorstandwhateverismorecomfortable.Restyourlefthandonyourlap
ifyouaresitting,orextendyourlefthandoutinfrontofyourbodyatthelevelofyour
waistlineifyouarestanding.Keepthelefthandpalmopentosignifyopennesstoreceiving
knowledgeaboutyourself.

includingmyself.Whateveranyonehasdonewrong,theydidsowithouttrulyknowingwhat
theyweredoing.

applyasmallamountofpressure.Ask:Please,mayIreceivemyselfrealization.
Youcancompletethisprocedureseveraltimesifyoulike.Sincepeoplehave
varyingresults,itisasoundideatoperformthisproceduremorethanoncetofullybenefit
fromit.

Whatdowedoafterwehavecompletedthisprocedure?Howdoesbeingconnectedwith
thesourceaffectourdaytodaylife?
Theprocedurethatwasdonewasanintroductiontoourtrueself.Inordertobefully
integratedwiththisreality,adailylettinggoshouldoccur.
Beingattachedtoideas,people(ourselvesaswell),andobjects,createssuffering.
Attachmentrequirestheinvestmentofexpectations.Whenourexpectationsarenot
reciprocated,wefeelletdown.
Whoeverwethinkweareisinconsequentialtowhowereallyare:thesourceitself.
Themoreweletgoofwhatwehold,themorewetransitiontobeingourtrueself.Wedo
nothavetoworryaboutlettinggoofthesource,asitisouressentialnature.
Whenweintegratewiththesource,wecanseeourobstaclesastrivial.Our
problemsarenothingmorethanpassinggamesoftheego.Withoutadheringtotheego,
whichistheconsciousnesswithinusthattellsusabouttheIormypartofourlives,we
canrecognizeourtrueself.
Whenweletgoofwhatwehold,westarttonoticewithmoredegreethatour
desiresarenotimportant.Bydistancingourselvesfromdesires,andallowingourselvesto

bemoreconnectedtothesource,wecanbetrulysatisfied,asthesourceiscomplete
fulfillmentitself.
Totrulydo,donothing.Watchtheegoofourselvesandothers.Beareceiverthat
doesnotreact.Understandthatitisonlytheego,andnothingelse.
Assumethepositionofbeingthesource.Thesalvationofhumanityreliesonour
knowingofthis.

Theprimarycauseofunhappinessisneverthesituation

butyourthoughtsaboutit.

Believinginourthoughtscouldbeourgreatestmistake.Ourthoughtsformouridentityand
whatweidentifyourenvironmentwith.Theideasweholdontoaboutourselvesandwhatis
aroundusmakeuslimitednotopentotheconceptionlesssource.
Thatiswhytheprocedureofselfrealizationisessentialtoundertake:itallowsusto
detachourselvesfromourthoughts.Insteadofengaginginourthoughts,itisbetterto
watchthemaswewouldguestsinourhousepermittingthemtocome,buthavinga
limitedtimetostay.Beingatwarwithourthoughtsdoesnothelpneitherdoes
sympathizingwiththem.
Thoughtsareoftendifficulttobedetachedabout,astheyusuallyareillogicaland
sometimesoutrightstrange,whenitseemsnaturaltohaveaninnerdialogalongthelines
of,HowcanIthinkofsomethinglikethat!Butthatistheegosgame:tryingtoseeifitcan
makeusreact.Thisremindsofthefamousmotto,Attitudeiseverything.Somepeople
seegoingonpublictransportationtobeanuisance,whileothersviewitasawaytogetto
knowpeopleandbeproductivecreatively.Ouregowantsustofeeleitherproudand
powerful,ordepressedandalone.Thatiswhyextremesexist.Thesourcehasno
extremes,asithasnomeasure.
Ifwebelieveinourthoughts,wecreateanartificialrealityofwhoweareandhow
oursurroundingsoperate.Whenwewatchourthoughtsfromadistance,weareatpeace.It
isakintobeinginachairinthesky,watchingourselvesandtheinteractionsofour

environment:withinusiscompletestillness,becausewedonothingbutwitness.Thisisthe
peacethatwehavebeenseekingthroughthegainofprofit,thegainofarelationship,the
gainofmaterialpossessions,andthegainofknowledgethoughthereisneveraneedfor
gain.Withinusiseverythingtheimmortality,thepowertoencompasstheUniverse.
Butthiscanbeonlyrealizedwhenwedonotindulgeinouregos.Wearenotour
mind,emotions,orbody,nomatterhowmuchtheegotriestopersuadeusotherwise.We
arealloneasilhouettethatharborsthereflectionofthesource.Humanitysmaindefectis
thatitidentifieswiththesilhouetteasitself,forgettingthatithasasource.
Theesotericviewonthesourceisthatthereisnothingelseandithasalwayshas
beenthisway.Allmanifestationsofthesourceonlyseemtoexistasindividualparts,when
infactitisallthesource.Existenceasweknowitmaymerelybeaplay,sothatthesource
canbeawitnesstoitself.
Inessence,thesourceharborsnoidentifications,andthereforeislimitlessin
potential.Bythinking,wecannotexplainit,aseachthoughttakesastance,andultimately
thesourcehasnoposition.Perhapstheonlythoughtthatisimportantisthatexistenceisin
essencetheinfiniteprimordialsourcethemanifestationsaresimplyphantoms.

Thoughinbooks,sharingideasisusuallythepremise,conceptsarenotentirelyimportant
inthisparticularbook.Mentalunderstandingcanonlygosofar:evenatruththatwehave
acceptedinourmindcanbeshownasfalsethroughlogicalconclusions.Theultimate
comprehensionwecangarnerisachievedbynotinvolvingourmentalcapabilities,butby
experiencingthetruthinsteadofthinkingaboutit.
Thoughtheprocedureinthethirdchapterisastartintothisexperienceof
comprehendingtruthonaphysicalanddeeplypersonallevel,thereisaneedtogofurther
intotheawarenessoftruth.
Everymomentiscrucialevenasecondofinattentiveness,believinginthoughtsor
theillusionthatcomprisesourreality,candrawusawayfromwhoweare.Intruth,most
peoplelivevicariouslythroughtheiregoandplacetheirfaithinarealitythatisbuiltby
individualperception.Increasingonesawarenessofhowtheegoactsandlearninghowto
lifttheveilofsupposedexistenceiswhatcomesafterselfrealization.
Theegoisadestructiveforcethatwantsmoreforitselfevenatthecostof
someoneslife.Thoughthisforcesoundsmenacing,themajorityofpeopleadheretoits
wishesandcommands.Thisisduetotheegosnaturebeingsubtleenoughthataperson
believeswithoutdoubtthattheiractionsandthoughtsaretheirown,andwerenotinduced
bytheego.
Anexerciseonecandotorecognizetheegoandtoquietit,evenifmomentarily,is
towatchonesthoughtswhenbeingspokento.Onthewhole,peopleareproddedto
interjecttheindividualtheyarespeakingwithtoexpresstheirownideas,orwhenthe
speakerendstheirspeech,peoplehavepreparedtheirownspeechtofollowuptheideas

thathavebeenspokenabout.Insteadofpreparingmaterialtospeakaboutafteraspeaker
endstheirbit,orinterjectingsomeonesspeech,itisbettertowatchonesmindasa
witnessandonlylistentothepersonspeaking,soakingintheideasofthepersonthatis
speaking.Surprisingly,thisactcanbringboththelistenerandthespeakerintoastateof
thoughtlessawareness.
Thisexercisepointsoutthenatureoftheegoandhowwecandealwithit.Theego
isnottobefought,ortobechallenged,asitrelishesinthatkindofprovocation.Thebest
waytocopewiththeegoistosimplybeawareofit.Whenwewitnesssomeoneor
something,wearecreatingadistancefromitandus.Ifwewitnesstheego,wecancreate
adistancebetweenitandwhowereallyare.
Realityandourselvesarenotdifferent,aswearereality.Thereisonlyonelife,which
isthesource.Thoughwearethesource,wehaveforgottenwhoweare.
Sure,wehavetoberealisticandliveanormallifethatdoesnotactasadestructive
forceinitsfreedom,butbeingawareofourtruthisessentialtolivingabalancedexistence.
Manyseekersoftruthwouldliketoliveinfaroffplacesorintemplestoattain
enlightenment.Thesearewonderfulplacestomeditateforcertain,yetthetruetestofa
seekeroftruthistoliveamongthechaosofmodernthinking,culture,andbehaviorand
remainatpeace.Itiseasytobefeelpeacefulbeingsurroundedbygloriousmountaintops
orasanctuarywheremonksmeditatefrommorningtoevening.Butwhatpeacehasone
attainedtrulyifonecannotfacethemodernworldandliveinitwithpersonaltranquility?
Sereneplacesdonotholdthesecrettoenlightenmentbeinginspiritual
environmentsonlyallowsustofeeltheglimpsesofwhatwecouldbecome.Yet,wedont

havetobecomeanything.Ifthereisonlythesource,whatpossiblycanwebecome?
Lifeisareturningwedevisemethodsoflivingtoeventuallyknowthatthereisno
methodtoliving.Existenceisitselfandwillalwaysremainso.Identifications,thegrabbing
natureoftheego,ourbeliefinfabricatedrealityitisapartofexistencethatcreatedthe
opportunityforitselftobeunknowingsothatitcouldwitnessthejourneyofknowing.
Thesourceknowsnothing,andevenafterwitnessingthejourneyofknowing,it
continuestoharbornoconceptions.AsthecharacterJacquesdeBoyssaidin
ShakespearesAsYouLikeIt:

Alltheworld'sastage,
Andallthemenandwomenmerelyplayers:
Theyhavetheirexitsandtheirentrances
