H.S. Lewis: 1919 European Rosicrucian Communication

Preface by Linda S. Santucci
The following unedited letter, published as from the offices of the Hierophant R+C in Europe, and the response, answers different questions for individuals, dependingupon their knowledge of the Order Rosae Crucis and the history of the world-wide Rosicrucian movement of the past beyond and including the 20th Century. I leave allquestions to the research and analysis of the reader, therefore, and do not offerfurther comment relative to the validity of the founding of

AMORC in 1915; nor anycontinued sanctioning by the Order Rosae Crucis originally authorizing AMORC as avehicle of the Rosicrucian movement or, also, the broader movement known as theWestern Esoteric Tradition
 —
which involves many potentially sanctioned "vehicles",as individuals or as Orders.

Spencer Lewis as he is Imperator— And the Supreme Council of AMORC— "Salutations:— "This epistle to you must of necessity be well and faithfully heeded:1) "The duty having devolved upon us carefully inspecting thedevelopment of your Order in this country, and of testing by culcating aproper knowledge of occult teaching, we have now come to the end ofour watching and have taken counsel.2) "Therefore, we have the direction to say these things, that certainmisapprehensions and misconceptions concerning the status of yourOrder, arising undoubtedly from an honest purpose but by lack of certainindispensable facts, shall now and forever be caused to disappear and thatperfect harmony shall come into being.3) A. "We have seen that there is believed by some that membership inyour Order, of itself with nothing more, will render possible admission toand fraternal communication with Lodges of what is commonly called theORDER R+C, as existent in Europe and other parts of the world. We sayto you, that while there is an existent ORDER R+C, it has no lodgesystem as such a term is commonly used, and that admission thereto bymembers of your Order, while possible, is not a matter of right to any, butrather a matter of selection by the ORDER R+C in individual cases. Tothis end, therefore, we direct that all use of names, words, phrases or
