Preface
I dedicated the first edition of The Power of Your Identity to everyone stuck on the merry-go-round of life, looking for a way off and onto the road to happiness and success.
Seeing people frustrated, overwhelmed, and living their lives trying to avoid pain—wanting to stop the cycle, yet not knowing how—was a massive motivation for me to share the lessons I learned on the road from rock bottom to self-made millionaire. I was once in that very same place!
In the early 1990s, I went through a very tough time—my father was sick with cancer, and I was going through a divorce. While taking time off to care for my dad, I lost my job and moved back in with my mother.
A wrongful-termination lawsuit and caring for my ill father sucked away every penny in my savings account. At perhaps the worst time of my life, I launched a career in real estate, something I knew nothing about. In the next year, I sold only one home and made $4,000. I had hit my personal rock bottom.
They say when the student is ready, the teacher will appear and, thankfully, in my case, this was true. I found a mentor and began to turn my life around.
The first lessons my mentor shared with me became the basis for The Power of Your Identity, and these lessons remain relevant for anyone.
• Raise your standards.
• Change your limiting thoughts.
• Model strategies of success.
My mentor taught me that knowledge and skills form the base of the pyramid of success but are not enough on their own to guarantee success. We all know people who have a lot of knowledge and even some excellent skills but who never seem to amount to anything. We also know plenty of people with no skills and no specialized knowledge who seem to have it all.
In other words, knowledge is not power, and it alone will not lead you to success. Knowing the principles of success is not enough. You must take action in the right direction.
To be compelled to act, you need a clear vision. It may sound cliché, but to make things happen, you must give life to your dreams again! Successful people maintain their enthusiasm in spite of failures. You must cultivate a strong mindset and make resilience a habit. You must stop being content to settle for the crumbs of life. You must go for it, holding onto the knowledge that going for it will be the happiest time of your life.
It is human nature to want to succeed. That’s why we all love to play a sport or play video games or compete against someone better than us, not someone we can beat every time; we want to push ourselves to the next level. We innately enjoy challenges and competition. We want to be the best at whatever we do.
The ability to visualize what you want and believe it is possible is the first step to success. This can be harder than it sounds. Many people focus on what they don’t want and; therefore, get more of the same. Some people settle for less without even realizing it.
Almost every day, someone says to me, I am doing everything, have taken all the classes, and read all the books, but I am still struggling!
These people are like many others who try the wrong strategies for years and become discouraged and unmotivated. They make excuses instead of changes. They don’t accept that success rests in the details. They refuse to see their excuses will get them nowhere.
The harsh truth is that you are not doing all you can if you are not where you want to be in life.
Rock Thomas
Massive changes have taken place in our world, our economy, and in the lives of many people since The Power of Your Identity was first published. Working with thousands of people from all walks of life at seminars and training meetings and in private coaching sessions, I have learned people are still struggling and afraid. They are still tired of being disappointed again, embarrassed again, or rejected again.
Many tell themselves a story, a story that keeps them stuck where they are—comfortably numb, not living, and just surviving. They say, This is good enough,
or, I’ll do it later.
Acceptance and complacency have become so commonplace that most people accept this state of being rather than shooting for their personal best. They blame their lack of money and time and the state of the world around them for their lack of success, all the while avoiding change and the fear it brings.
Change is scary, but the alternative is to sneak to your death quietly and safely.
This updated edition of The Power of Your Identity offers a road map of the necessary shifts that must take place for any success to happen in your life. Learning these lessons enabled me to become one of the most successful realtors in the world and start a company dedicated to bringing success to others.
The Power of Your Identity will help you create a clear launchpad as you set personal goals that will lead to a compelling, exciting future. You will also learn how to change limiting thoughts and beliefs (the biggest obstacles to success).
Have you heard the expression, If you are not growing, you are dying.
? It is attributed to many people. Why? Because it is true. Successful people are always growing and learning from other successful people and from their mistakes. They model their lives on the lives of others who already achieved a result they desire. They learn from the best and most successful people in their chosen fields. You bought this book, and that’s a great place to start!
Many people live in an unconscious state, unaware of the thoughts and beliefs running their lives, their minds filled with uninspiring and discouraging opinions. You cannot learn something your mind insists you already know or says won’t work for you. But if you do not open yourself to the possibility that your inner voice is steering you wrong, you’ll remain closed-minded and shut off from any chance of success.
As you read, keep an open-minded attitude. Realize that, sometimes, the exercises you push against the most will turn out to hold the most significance and breakthroughs on your road to success. Trust the process and stay the course.
Two things will affect your life more than anything else—what you read and listen to and the people you spend time with. The most successful people learn from mentors, books, seminars, audio programs, and coaching. They infuse themselves with inspiration and motivation everywhere they go. They are constantly growing. Now, you are too.
You believe you can, or you believe you can’t. Either way, you are right.
Henry Ford
It is vitally important to understand how your belief systems, experiences, and people have affected your life. These effects happen at an unconscious level, so, unfortunately, most people do not pay any attention to or give credence to their invisible powers. You hardly even notice them. Our beliefs are often unconscious and subtle, yet they run our lives. And they will continue to do so until you figure out if yours are disempowering or empowering you and you learn to change them.
This book will help you through the process by showing you what’s happening inside yourself, below the surface, so you can take action and start getting the results you want in all areas of your life. All change on the outside begins with inner change.
Your identity and how you see yourself is most strongly expressed by the expectations you feel others have for you, your peer group’s norms, and your board of directors
(the people you see as most important in your life). These thoughts and feelings are the most potent force in your personality because of your unconscious desire to remain consistent with the way others see you and the way you have always seen yourself.
I will introduce you to your board of directors. Yours might include your brother, sister, father, mom, dad, grandparent, teacher, nasty neighbor, or ex-spouse. They are all the voices in your head that have created the beliefs currently guiding you. Most people believe these voices are who they are, but this is not true. If you think you are lazy, it is not because you are lazy; it is because your inner voices say you are. Your voice is your choice.
This book will help you determine if your inner voices are empowering or disempowering and show you how to make them work for you or shut them up so they can be replaced with better ones.
Before I met my mentor and absorbed life-changing lessons, my board of directors told me I was ugly because I had acne as a teenager. I spent years not going to events because I didn’t feel good enough. Some of us have other voices or voices for all occasions. These voices tell us we don’t have the right skills, enough time, or enough money to be successful. They remind us of all the other times we tried and failed to make meaningful changes in our lives. I am going to show you how to change your voice to something better.
The mind is a trickster whose primary job is to protect you from pain. It uses your inner voices to ask you, What if this happens? What if that happens?
and to point out things in the past that were painful. However, the mind only wants to keep you comfortable and stuck where you are. I want to help you break through to the other side where you can thrive and succeed unhampered.
The Power of Your Identity will help you change your inner voices to ones that will empower you to be or do anything. You will learn how to get people like Warren Buffet, Wayne Dyer, Oprah Winfrey,
