Scene excerpt from the book...

The squad room buzzed with activity. The killing of the fifth Mafia Don had city officials in a panic. Roy Mallory sat quietly inside Captain Mayhew's office, while the captain read his hastily prepared report. Finally, Mayhew put the report down and rubbed his hand across his face. He wastired, and it was beginning to show. Mallory noticed it too. He swiveled his chair around and absentlystared at the commotion in the outer office."What's your opinion, Roy?" asked Mayhew."My general opinion is the shit is going to hit the fan, and damn soon.""Mine too. I don't think the families are going to put up with much more of this. Four keyfigures, and the son of another, killed in less than three weeks. Retaliation is bound to come soon. Noforensic report yet, I see.""The ME's still picking up what's left of them with a blotter. He said tomorrow, at the earliest.""What about the bomb team? Anything from them?""They're still sifting through the rubble. They gave me a verbal prelim, though. Said they think it's some kind of plastic explosive. They think it might have been in something hanging on, or sittingagainst the inner wall."The captain shuffled through Mallory's report till he found the page he was looking for."What about the church? Have you checked that out?""I haven't gotten over there yet," said Mallory, removing a worn notebook from his pocket andthumbing through the pages. "Father James Matthew is the pastor at St. Domenics. He's been thereabout ten years, and is well known by the Gambrielli family. In fact, he's a frequent dinner guest at their house. He doesn't fit the picture of a bomber.""I know," said Mayhew, "but I still want you to talk to him. There might be something we'vemissed.""Sure, captain, I intended to.""Have you heard from Carmine?"
