MaGuire turned to say something to Fr. Fitz, when he noticed the Lincoln with the two men init. The man in the passenger seat raised a gun and pointed it at them."Look out," shouted MaGuire, pulling the steering wheel hard to the right, as he leaned downand pushed on the gas pedal. The Ford jumped forward and to the right, lurching up over the curb. Itstruck a fire hydrant, knocking it off its base and sending a stream of water gushing up into the air.The gunman in the Lincoln opened fire, but the bullets struck the rear of the Ford, shattering therear window and punching holes in the trunk. The blue car ran over a small embankment and ended upface down in a shallow ditch. Father Fitz threw himself on the floor of the car at the first sound of gunfire. When the car came to a stop in the ditch, he tumbled out the back door onto the ground.MaGuire scrambled out the front door.The Lincoln stopped at the top of the small embankment where Sweeney and Landau exited oneither side of the car. They immediately opened fire.Lopez lay across the front seat to get out of the line of fire. He grabbed the microphone from thecradle in front of the radio and shouted, "D-171 emergency. Shots fired, officer needs help. Balboaand Cortez."The radio crackled to life as units responded. Lopez unholstered his gun and rolled out thedriver's side. As his feet touched the ground and his body cleared the car, he saw Fr. Landau crouching behind the passenger door of the Lincoln. With his handgun ready, he hesitated an instant at the sight of the priest. Smoke and flame belched from Landau's gun. Lopez felt the impact of the bullets, and his body reeled back onto the front seat of the car.MaGuire cringed at the passenger side of the car and considered his options. There were damnfew of them he thought, as bullets punched through the Ford all around him. He saw Kevin's feet andlegs on the other side of the open rear door. He longed for his handgun that he left in his apartment atthe start of their trip. Just then, Lopez's body collapsed across the front seat of the car, and his gunclattered to the ground in front of MaGuire. He scooped it up and rolled around the open rear door,
