Introduction to Pittsburgh’s African American Community
www.pittsburghblackdirector y.com
The first directory, published in the 1984 RENAISSANCE TOO Magazine, included stories about the region’s
African American culture, struggles and progress as presented by the Western Pennsylvania Historical
Society’s “Facts About Black Pittsburgh: A Chronology 1755-1983”. In addition, the article “When the Hill Was
Hayti,” written by Dr. Ann Wilmoth revealed history a Hill District long forgotten.
While the Black Directory’s publishing history spans 27 years, the information in that first directory
magazine tells stories that take us back more that 200 years. You can read these stories and more about
Pittsburgh history on our “pittsburghblackdirectory” Facebook page.
The 2011 edition of the Black Directory paints today’s picture through listings and advertisements and most
importantly through the introductions of the people on the cover. They make a positive impact our community
in many areas. Several are nationally recognized for their business accomplishments, others have rich civil
rights and leadership experience and many keep watch on our public agencies for fair minority inclusion in
the workplace and in their purchasing efforts. Some of those in
the Directory are making their first foray into business and in
the non-profit arenas.

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh was founded in 1918 with the shared National Urban League mission of
enabling African-Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity and power, and civil rights. Today, the Urban
League of Greater Pittsburgh has become one of the most accomplished affiliates in the country, leading by example
with a perfect 5 out of 5 on a recent performance review conducted by the National Urban League. The rating assessed
three key criteria: organizational soundness, organizational vitality, and implementation of mission.
The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh is focused on serving African-American constituents and other minorities, but
no one is ever turned away. Last fiscal year, the affiliate served over 20,000 individuals in Pittsburgh and the
surrounding counties. As the largest comprehensive social service/civil rights organization in Southwestern
Pennsylvania, the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh provides services in the areas of education, health advocacy,
housing, early childhood and youth development, hunger services, employment and career training and counseling, and
economic empowerment. For example, between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010, the agency served more than 3,200
youth through the Education and Youth Development Department, more than 8,200 adults through the Employment,
Training and Economic Empowerment Department, more than 200 families through the Family Growth and Child
Development Department, and more than 1,800 families through the Housing Department and Hunger Services
Program.
Two of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh’s current programs – Operation Home and Hunger Services – provide
outreach to residents of Allegheny, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland Counties. Operation Home
offers first time homebuyers classes to prepare themselves to qualify for home buying. Hunger Services provides
counseling and referral to citizens who are eligible to receive food stamps but who may not realize it.
Employment, Training and Economic Empowerment Department — This department provides job skills
training, career options, and job placement for people at varying professionals levels, from the constantly unemployed
to the successful businessperson.
Family Growth and Child Development — The goal of the Family Growth and Child Development Department is
to promote positive outcomes for children and youth by strengthening, supporting, and empowering families and
communities. These programs and initiatives focus on child development, school readiness, early literacy, after school
care, childcare, health, youth development, family support services, and community development.
Housing — The Housing Department addresses homelessness, provides mortgage foreclosure counseling, provides
mediation services between tenants and their landlords and other creditors, assists families to find affordable, quality
housing, and helps first time home buyers through the mortgage and purchasing process to enable them to own their
own homes. The Hunger Services program also operates under Housing.
Education and Youth Development — This department provides education and financial aid counseling to anyone
interested in post-secondary education. The Education and Youth Development Department teaches young people
about the educational options they have and develops the leadership skills they need to be successful in school and
beyond. This department is responsible for hundreds of youth completing secondary school and moving on to
professional training schools, two-year and four-year colleges and other areas of special training.
