REAL ESTATE TOPS LIST AS SOURCE OF LAWMAKERS’ OUTSIDE INCOME

NYPIRG URGES GOVERNOR, LEGISLATURE TO ACT ON ETHICS LEGISLATION

The New York Public Interest Research Group today released its review of the sources
of outside income for state lawmakers. The review was based on disclosures made on state
ethics forms. Realtors/landlords and lawyers topped the list. As the governor and the
Legislature discuss public disclosure of the names of lawmakers’ business clients, it is
important to note that lawyers total only 45 of the 211 legislators.

As you can see, 39 legislators listed more than one source of outside income, so these totals do not add up to
211. For the purposes of this review, pensions and investment-related revenue, such as interest or dividends,
were not included.

These 26 individuals are all new legislators who presumably have given up their jobs at the federal, state, or
local levels of government.
