ONLY A PIPE DREAM?THE COLLAPSE OF AMERICAN POLITICSMIDTERM ELECTION VOTER GUIDEPLUS:

Campus BluePrint | November 2010 3

Hey class of 2010 and class of 2011, remember2008?Getting asked if you were registered to vote vetimes a day, Obama posters on every wall, therickshaw to the polls? And that January, whocould forget Snowbama Day?We still have a one-kilometer race to Morehead,Baracktoberfest and a costume party in the Pit.But without Obama up for election, everything just seems a little less... sexy.Nevertheless, these elections are crucial for the direction of our country for the nexttwo years and even beyond. Some point to the rst two years of the Obama presiden-cy and say that “Change We Can Believe In” has turned into change we
could
believein. We at

disagree. As Carey Hanlin demonstrates in his analysis of the Obama administration thus far(pages 6-7), Obama’s presidency has been a resounding success legislatively if notpolitically. And check out the timeline at the bottom. Our president has been busy.Health care reform and new federal nance regulations, a Recovery and ReinvestmentAct that saved our national economy, new fuel standards for 2011 car models andconrmed plans for a U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq are just a few of the things thisadministration has accomplished in its rst two years. The elections will be viewedas a referendum on the actions of both Obama and Congress, and it is crucial that weshow our support.“Yes We Can” has become “Yes We Did.” But there is still much le to accomplish.Midterm elections may not be sexy, but “I Voted” stickers certainly are. Do your civicduty and vote, either early at Morehead Planetarium or at the polls on Nov. 2.Erin Becker
