WHERE’S THE FIRE, CHIEF?

omy of this department a bad thing? Thefire department just recently voted forand selected as their choice for Fire Chief,a current member of their department,Brent Biedenbender. Brent is a Butlerresident who has been a member of thefire service since 1992. He has been withLannon since 1/10 - has been a Lt. in Lan-non since 07/10 and has been a WI Certi-fied Level II firefighter since 2/96. Brenthas been a WI State Certified MPO since7/04 and an EMT since 6/95. He becamean IV-Tech in 6/03 and is a WI State Certi-fied Level I Instructor. He currentlyteaches at WCTC for Fire and EMS Certi-fied Officer 1. Additionally, Brent is a basicmechanic on the Fire Department Vehi-cles. Fully certified and highly qualified,we believe that Brent would make an ex-cellent Fire Chief for this department. <

or many months, the Village Boardhas known that veteran Chief GaryGeorgenson would be retiring at the endof 2010. The board was quick to changethe ordinances so that they could managethe selection of a new chief. So what is the result - nonew chief as of this date. The Lannon Volunteer FireDepartment has been op-erating since it was char-tered by Wisconsin in 1917.The system of organization and chief se-lection has worked for 93 years! And nowwe have a group of Trustees who thinkthey know more and can do it better. How could they forget that this is a Volun-teer Fire Department? Why is the auton-

t the January Village Board meeting,it was proposed that Lannon andMenomonee Falls create a joint munici-pal court. The idea of reducing costs byconsolidating operations could benefitboth communities. This action wouldhave to be completed by May 2011 tocoincide with an election year necessity.Inexplicably, the board, prompted byTrustee Newman, decided that therewas not enough time to coordinatethese actions and delayed this cost-saving measure for another 2 years. Thedelay was voted on and without dissent, approved unanimously. The big questionnow remains - is saving our money worththe effort to make it happen quickly? <

ake a look around Lannon. Whatphysically has changed in the pastyear? For starters, a few miscellaneoussigns have been removed from somebuildings. A few more For Sale signshave appeared. A new fence appearedon one property (under threat of litiga-tion). A new building on Good HopeRoad appeared (still empty?). Did any-one see a Welcome to Lannon sign? Nonew housing developments were ap-
proved by what I’ve observed to be a
mostly negative Village Board and PlanCommission. And so it continues. <
